I'm racing this afternoon, but wanted to mention that Davy Crockett is approaching 103 miles in his 24 hour race (www.acrosstheyears.com).  The race ends for him at 9 a.m. He has set PR's at 50K, 50M, 100K and 100M. Right now he is in 3rd place.

Jim Skaggs is in the 72 hour race there and at 120 miles. He appears to be struggling, but is still continuing to keep on moving.

Go post some emails there and cheer them on!

Race Report:

1 mile warmup

OK - Sasha wanted me to do a 5K time trial to see how fast I can go.  I was really scared about this because I knew I would have to be uncomfortable the entire race.  I also knew that I had to overcome a mental block I have that says I cannot run fast on the road.

Mile 1 - I started out pretty fast, but was kind of bummed that I was soon in last place.  I decided that I needed to keep pushing myself and would look at my watch and sometimes say 'wow' and other times say 'push'. 9:10 - the body was warming up.  I was breathing hard, but not feeling tired - so far so good on the mental block.

Mile 2 - Sasha passed me on the out and back shortly after the start of mile 2. I was speeding up at times, but still dead last and making no progress at picking off other runners. It looked like they were all running easily.  Benjamin encouraged me at 1 3/4 saying "you can do it." That was nice.  Shortly after the turnaround, one of the guys that was running with a girl about 20 feet ahead of me, slowed down to a walk. Chicked him.....9:07

Mile 3 - I kept telling myself I could push harder. Breathing was really difficult at this point in time. I was really spent.  Chicked another guy right around 2.5 miles.  There was a small uphill and I tried to push up it. I could see the church where we finished and kept saying "get me to the church on time." With two turns to go I was pushing hard and feeling like I wanted to quit but refusing to quit. Shortly after that turn Sasha and Julia came back and got me and kept telling me to catch up and give them 5. I think I caught up twice. Sasha also guided me on the fastest area to run in to avoid ice.  8:51

Home Stretch:  Sasha was telling me to sprint.  I couldn't get anything else out of my body and was trying hard, but just didn't have any get up and go left. (on pace for 8:10 - so I guess I did sprint some).

That was just plain HARD!  But so satisfying.  I took almost 3.5 minutes off my previous PR and that was on a short course.  It sure felt good to quit running. Sasha kind of looked at me like 'I told you you could do it.' Sarah said he must have been pleased at my effort because he wasn't yelling at me. :)

Avg: 9:01/Max 7:07

2 miles cooldown with Sarah (12:00 avg)

I won a blue ribbon and $2 in prize money for winning my age group (ok - I was the only old person there). I am going to frame my award and prize money.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

Good luck on your race! I can't wait to hear all about it!

From Marion on Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 20:55:54

YEAH!!! You are SMOKIN' fast! I am SO proud of you! Look at what you did! I am just amazed and SO proud of you!!! Dang it girl!

What an AWESOME way to end you year! Happy New Year!!!!

From tarzan on Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 20:58:53

Thanks, Marion. I am still a bit in shock but also have a nice 'glow' around me. Oh wait - that probably is odor and I need to shower. Yeah - I think I can finally say that in 2008 I became a real runner.

Happy New Year to you too! Survive the party and start the new year right. (Make all sorts of resolutions you can break).

From leslie on Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 21:22:07

YOU ARE AMAZING!!!!! I can not believe you could maintain that pace and effort and pain!!! My hat is off to you!!!! That is a fabulous way to end the year!!!

From tarzan on Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 21:36:50

Tarzan is partying. Maybe I will open the frango mints. Or have a hot chocolate. What a party animal.

Thanks for letting me call and brag, Leslie.

The run was really hard work, but, as I have mentioned in the past, I guess I always worked long and not as hard as I thought.

Sasha may have 'created a monster'. I am now wondering what my potential is. I seriously doubt it would come close to a local elite level, but I think it will be worth the effort to see what I can do with my body and mind in 2009.

From Kelli on Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 23:19:22

YOU DID AWESOME!!!!!!! YEAH!!!! WAY TO GO!!!!!! YEAH AGAIN!!!!!!

Thanks for the detailed race report. 5k's are just HARD, really! You have to push the entire time. I hate them and will not run in any! I feel the same about 10k's! I am just not a person who is comfortable with pain, but you DID IT!!!!!! WOO-HOO!!!

From leslie on Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 23:23:50

Okay Kelli, I could have written that. 5 and 10k's are too fast, give me a 50k ANY day!! Maurine, you are a machine!!! Party on girl! Eat treats and celebrate properly! You deserve it!

From Kelli on Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 23:25:01

I will see if I agree with you after I do this 50k. I think my favorite has got to be the half marathon! You can push some, but you do not have to kill yourself!

From leslie on Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 23:37:44

I think half marathons are tough!! The grandkids are bugging me, I guess I better go interact with them, or they will think I am the evil step grandmother. Oh, crap, one is crying now! See ya.

From tarzan on Thu, Jan 01, 2009 at 10:04:08

You guys stay up too late! I crashed at 9:30.

Kelli - which 50K are you going to do? One with us?

I didn't necessarily like the pushing, but I liked the satisfaction of getting it over with and surpassing my C, B, and A plans. And now I know I have more speed in me.

From Kelli on Thu, Jan 01, 2009 at 10:07:02

I knew you had the speed!!! Those 5k's are hard, though, really. You did great and the satisfaction is awesome.

Yep, the 50k in the St George area. I am doing it, we will see how i DO.

From tarzan on Thu, Jan 01, 2009 at 10:15:56

Yay - another for Red Mountain!

From Teena on Thu, Jan 01, 2009 at 10:26:19

Maurine,

YOU ARE SO TOUGH!! Congrats on the awesome 5K!! Check you out. Pushing yourself to limit like you did is very impressive. Way to earn that $2!!!

Nicely done Maurine!!

From Sasha Pachev on Thu, Jan 01, 2009 at 12:25:32

I think your potential is around 4:00 in the marathon. To get there, you need to continue working on endurance the way you've been doing it, and also need to move the speed barrier up a little bit. As I mentioned earlier, the key workout for you right now should be intervals at 8:00 pace. Does not matter how short. The idea is to get used to the pace.

I am also curious to see how fast you can run an all out 100 meters.

From tarzan on Thu, Jan 01, 2009 at 12:47:09

Thank you for your wisdom and encouragement, Sasha. I did throw in a couple where I got down in the 7's today, but they were on a downhill stretch.

The plan is for me to do my treadmill test next Monday.

Maybe I will come down there one Saturday morning to run with Sarah and we can time me in a 100 meters.

From jeffmc on Fri, Jan 02, 2009 at 17:29:41

I think that you need to change your 5k goal for 2009 now that you beat that goal in 2008 :) Good job

From tarzan on Fri, Jan 02, 2009 at 17:39:56

(sigh) - fine - make me work even harder. I think I need to go back to the slow running blog. :)

Thanks!

From Smooth on Fri, Jan 02, 2009 at 18:00:08

WOW, just read your race report. Here's my belated CONGRATS!!!! AWESOME race and WAY to get your PR, the prize and AG win!!! I hate 5K's. I've only done one real 5K race. It's way out of my comfort zone. Kudos to you for pushing hard with pain.
