I am really battling depression every since I left work last night.  (I really hate holiday weekends when everyone has such great family plans and I am all alone).  I read scriptures and prayed a lot and found one in the Doctrine & Covenants which kept me going last night and this morning, "Be of good cheer, Maurine, for I am in your midst and I have not forsaken you."

I considered cancelling out of the run today, but talked with my sister about training last night (you have no idea how exciting and fun that is for me after years of watching her struggling with obesity and inactivity) for an hour - I decided to go ahead.  Didn't sleep much because I kept the puppy in bed with me - I was concerned because she threw up all her food on Thursday and wouldn't eat at all yesterday (and didn't shred a piece of newspaper I left out for her to play with) - but she started perking up in the middle of the night so I knew she was going to be okay and was happy to see her wolf down food this morning.

Marion texted me a little before 6 to say she was sick and not coming.  That almost made me not show up for the run because I knew I would be alone all morning - but pushed myself out of bed knowing that I had arranged this run.

When I got to the park I was joined by Smooth, Kelli, Becca, Metcalf Running (Laurie), Rachel and Heidi. They took off and I was left in the dust.  I stayed on the trails on the side except for maybe 1 mile of my run. Beautiful day - no rain yet. My plan was to walk 1 minute/run 9 minutes and see how long I could go without knee pain in the IT band.  I saw the rest of the runners about a half mile from the turnaround.

No pain - leg held up good. That means my training and recovery are going well.

Stopped at the gym on the way home and did a leg and core workout.

My son just came in to do laundry. I haven't seen him in 3 weeks so this is a nice treat.

I am so sorry to hear you are struggling Maurine! Thanks for introducing us all to the trail and for showing up when you did not want to! It is a great trail, you were right.

Have a great day, talk to your son, take him to lunch or dinner or something.

Oh, and good job on adding more to your work out!!

I am So so sorry! Life just really is a bugger some times and not the way we need it to be :( I feel terrible! ( I actually feel better, but I am SO sad I was not there for you!! :(

From Smooth on Sat, Apr 11, 2009 at 16:04:41 from 70.56.102.54

OH Maurine, I just want to cry. THANK YOU so much for hosting this run. THANK YOU for coming even when you didn't feel like it; and you ran alone the whole time. You have so much inner strength. I'm more and more inspired by you. I'm glad that IT band is getting better and your recovery is coming along. Oh yes, please enjoy the rest of the weekend with your "baby". And I'm glad Twilight is perking up.

YOU WILL BQ and run Boston before you know it!!!! P.S. Prayer and scriptures study is the source of my peace too. My days are better if I remember to give equal time to the Lord who never takes a "holiday" and loves us unconditionally!

That was so great today! I want to thank you for introducing us to that great trail. I'm looking forward to running with you again.

From Maurine/Tarzan on Sat, Apr 11, 2009 at 17:21:27 from 97.117.61.168

Thanks, ladies! I exercise a lot and take St. Johns Wort (used Prozac for years and weaned myself off that a few months ago) and usually it helps. The doldrums are almost always on the weekend because I face so many days alone.

Marion - please don't feel bad. I probably wouldn't have even told you. I could have put on headphones and listened to music - but I chose to use the time to think and enjoy the sounds of nature. Plus, I passed one lady runner just before getting on the PR Trail at 3.5 and she turned around about 1/2 a mile before the end of the trail and so I spent my time running behind piles of dirt trying to catch her before we got back to Bangerter Pkwy (ok - pretending I was a vampire hunting....) and was pretty happy when I passed her right before the 3.75 marker on the trail.

Smooth - I have run alone so many years and am used to it and comfortable with it.

I have talked with my son off and on for a while. Took a nap for about an hour while he was playing Guitar Hero. I leave at 5 to head down to Provo to take my Dad out to dinner and then we are seeing some musical/dance performance at the MarryRot Center.

Bec - isn't it a great trail!? And lots of time you see the Team in Training people out there. I like running it in different orders to get a whole new experience.

I really like the equestrian portion because it is so much easier on my knees. In fact, I came up with an idea for a new blog for my other non-FRB blog that I am hoping to write up soon.

Maurine, I'm so sorry about missing the run this morning. I'm a single mother most of the time, and as such can't get out as often as I'd like. Last week was such a treat for me. I was sad to miss today, especially after reading everyone's different accounts of it. I know it's not all of what you're feeling, but you should chalk some of it up to post-ultra marathon lull--everyone else is still building up to their big events and your healing and winding down. After every major race I've really trained my heart out for (finish or not) I've really struggled with depression afterwards (again not trying to discount other factors here). Not sure what all is to blame physiogically, but it happens every time. You'll pull through. I hope we can do another run soon. You know a lot of great locations!

From Smooth on Sat, Apr 11, 2009 at 17:25:39 from 70.56.102.54

WHAT A GREAT DAUGHTER!!! Have a great dinner and fun concert at the MarryRot Center. You're a riot!!!

Maurine, You are in good company, I'm called Darkhorse for more than one reason you know. Depression is a bad card dealt to us so we have to discard it and play the good cards that we already have. I find living in the moment helps me tremendously.

From Maurine/Tarzan on Sat, Apr 11, 2009 at 17:59:24 from 97.117.61.168

That explains a lot, Steve. What drives me crazy is how quickly it hits sometimes. I was very proud of myself for dragging myself out of bed. There are days when I just want to pull up the covers and never get out.

Are you back from Moab?

From Metcalf Running on Sat, Apr 11, 2009 at 17:59:42 from 71.219.132.113

Maurine, I'm so glad I got to meet you today :) It was such a pleasure to run with such lovely ladies... most of the time I run alone so I LOVE having company. It is a lovely trail... if I lived closer I would be there every day. Some time you will need to come up north and run the Ogden River Parkway. It's the last bit of the Ogden marathon. They have extended it and you can get a good run now.

From Maurine/Tarzan on Sat, Apr 11, 2009 at 18:06:18 from 97.117.61.168

Laurie - until last summer I lived in Layton since 1991. I used to run from our house to my sister's house in West Haven.

I love the Ogden River Parkway. We used to walk it when going to the Dinosaur Park and of course, with the marathon.

Another nice 'off street' run is one out in Syracuse - there is a half marathon held there in May. I've also run portions of the Legacy Parkway Trails and like them (but they need more shrubbery for the VPBs)

There are a lot of neat trails up there to run on too - do you ever do them?

From RAD on Sat, Apr 11, 2009 at 21:44:03 from 67.166.99.8

Maurine I am so glad you came this morning!!! It wouldn't have been the same without you there. Sorry about asking about Odee I get my comments/blogs all mixed up sometimes!! Plus, I have runners brain - when I run, my brain doesn't work! I will do better now though..PROMISE :)

You did such a great job! That trail can get tough with those rolling hills, AND you were on the dirt trail! I hope things get feeling better this weekend AND I'm glad that IT is behaving itself. Someday you'll have to give me your secret to running a 50 miler...WOW! I'm just starting to think I might be able to do 26 and not die :)

From britta on Sun, Apr 12, 2009 at 00:24:18 from 66.74.232.169

You would totally be invited to my Easter Dinner if we lived close!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Have a wonderful sunday and remember you are never truly alone!!!

From Teena on Sun, Apr 12, 2009 at 14:35:55 from 67.177.20.13

Oh Maurine!!

I hate that you have to struggle like this. Depression is such a real and hard thing. I love that you are talking about it though ... hopefully that will help.

What can I do for you?

From tarzan on Sun, Apr 12, 2009 at 16:40:23 from 97.117.61.168

Thanks for you concern everyone. It is just something I have to deal with on my own. However, I got out of bed and made it through church and now Satan will usually leave me alone for a while. :)

From britta on Sun, Apr 12, 2009 at 17:34:48 from 66.74.232.169

don't worry I think Satan is bugging me enough today that he won't have time for you!!!!! Love ya!!!

From leslie on Sun, Apr 12, 2009 at 21:22:37 from 76.23.61.78

Oh crap Maurine, I hope by now all is well and you are back to your chipper self! WE all go thru that from time to time, thank goodness for running and FRIENDS!!!

Let me know when you do Wheeler Farm this week!

From tarzan on Sun, Apr 12, 2009 at 21:50:46 from 97.117.61.168

Les - I'm not sure if I will be doing Wheeler Farm this week. I am only running 4 days a week for now and planning a street run tomorrow morning, Millcreek Canyon with you on Tuesday, a run on Thursday and then a long run on Saturday.

I'm thinking this week might be really dangerous for me - and am trying to be cautious. Since I didn't hurt on any of my runs last week, mentally I am wanting to up my miles and I know that it would be foolish to do that at this stage in my rehabilitation.

From leslie on Sun, Apr 12, 2009 at 22:16:27 from 76.23.61.78

Okay, I will plan on the Millcreek one with you for this week. I told Lori 4:00 at Einsteins on Tuesday.

Glad all your body parts are cooperating!
