YIKES! I just agreed to run the Buffalo Run 50 miler instead of the 50K.  Leslie - I am going to need you to pace me!  Think you can keep me on pace at the end?

PM - Planned to run outside, but my son was over and spent time with him.

Went to the gym and did 3.5 miles on the treadmill. I was planning to do more, but my stomach was really bothering me and the pain got bad and I couldn't force myself to throw up.

Rested for an hour and was going to run on the treadmill - but the 19 year old messed it up, so it took to long to get the belt working properly.  Oh well, I'll make up some miles tomorrrow.

From britta on Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 15:22:13

I have been wondering how "Making the Cut" was going. From your entry yesterday it sounds like you are doing great. Great job passing up the second eclair. That is tuff, be strong?

Thanks for the info on how to change my blog.

From DonGardiner on Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 15:24:52

Wow, you have more guts than I do. I'm still debating whether or not to do one of the Buffalo Runs. I'm pretty bummed about the Red Mountain 50K being canceled. What kind of time are you looking to finish the 50 miler?

Dale

From tarzan on Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 15:35:13

Dale - there is a 12 1/2 hour limit for the race. My goal is to be dead last and use every second of the race. I just want to finish.

From leslie on Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 16:27:08

Holy Crap!!! You really are going to do it???? Yes, I would love to pace you!!! I will work off my fanny and be ready and I will treat you right! I'll start thinking of jokes, and juicy stories, I will learn some cool songs to sing to you and it will be soooo much fun!!!! ARe you still going to do Sunmart with me? This is all so very excting, I wish I was doing the whole thing with you, but I will not be ready for a 50 until the end of our running season. Woo Hoo!

From tarzan on Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 16:34:15

Yep, I am going to do it. (I am skeered to death).

I will need you to keep me motivated and from whining. I'm going to really need your help!

From Marion on Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 16:41:34

How many pacers are you going to need? I'd love to do it if you could use another fabulously cute motivational pacer ;)

From leslie on Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 16:43:38

I will be the best pacer ever!!! If you start whinning I will knock your head off! It will be fun fun fun!!!! I need to check the website, do you want me to do the last 25 miles?

From Kelli on Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 17:02:20

I would happily pace you as well! We can be the red hot pink pacers!!!

Hey, do you know how we will be reimbursed for the 50k??? I paid for it when I signed up, right?? I have a receipt in my inbox saying I paid. I am still so sad about it.

Should I do the Buffalo 50k? It did not sound very fun (running in circles---like two really big circles without a lot of potties and aid stations). Have you done it before?

From tarzan on Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 17:09:19

Anyone who wants to come and join me on different portions of the run will be appreciated.

Kelli - the 50K is supposedly actually harder than the 50M. I ran the 25K the first year and the 50K the next two years. Once you finish the 25K course, the rest of the 50 miler is actually flatter than doing a repeat run.

Leslie says it is the hardest 50K course she has done.

You don't need as many aid stations in an Ultra - because you carry a lot of your aid with you and have drop bags available. Typically they are 5-8 miles apart - and the Buffalo run aid stations meet that criteria.

From Smooth on Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 17:09:56

WOW, you go Tarzan woman!!! 50 miles. That's like 2 marathons. I don't think I could lift even a toe after 26, okay 27 miles.

Red Hot Pink pacers are gonna rock!!! Do buffalos chase red like they do with bulls in Spain?

From leslie on Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 17:13:08

Kelli, that is where I met Maurine, we did the 50K together. She saved me from a buffalo attack. We are bonded together forever.

Here is my two cents worth on 50k's, I have only done three, my favorite was Red Mountain, because I loved the terrain, my second favorite was Goblin Valley, and the Buffalo Run came in last. It is still great, but it is tough, doing that second uphill loop is a bugger, but hey, it would be fun if you came out and we were all there together, sorta together...on the same island anyway. Maurine and I are going to try the Sapper Joe 50k the week after Ogden, it is a new one put on by Wasatch Running club, out by Camp Williams. They are all great really, the race directors all do such a good job, I just like the down hill courses better.

From Kelli on Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 17:18:46

What to do, what to do! I want a race with aide stations everywhere---with cakes and candy and brownies and ice cream. Which race is that????

I wonder where the 50k at Camp Williams will take you? That sounds interesting, but right after a marathon?? UGHHH. I just do not know what to do. But I had my heart set on a 50k, so I need to find one.

Do Buffaloes really run free and attack?? For real?

From leslie on Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 17:26:27

Kelli, you do have to do a 50K, they are SO much fun! Let me know which one you decide on and I will try and do it too.

A buffalo actually chased the first place runner and Maurine and I watched it, the runner had to jump up onto a huge boulder, the buffalo was circling and I about DIED because we were the only other 2 people in this valley, I figured if the buffalo couldn't get to this fellow he would chase us, I was tempted to turn around and bag the whole race and Maurine encouraged me to keep going, I seriously ran one mile down the valley at at 8:00 mile pace, and as you know I DON'T run that fast. My computer print out on the race proves I ran that whole mile like a wild woman, my heart was pounding like crazy, I thought the buffalo was right behind me, when I got to the bottom of the valley the buffalo was gone, but it freaked me out. The runner in first place told the race director about it and it was printed up in the Ultra Runner magazine.

From Kelli on Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 17:30:32

I am scared of Buffalo (I am scared of dogs, cats, deer, moose, and mostly mountain lions---now I can add Buffalo to that!)

I thought they were all behind fences. Hmmmm...maybe that race is too scary for me!

From leslie on Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 17:37:02

It was a fluke Kelli, you would be just fine, but it did scare the crap out of me. The next year we did it, there was no problem. Don't let something like a "little" Buffalo stop you.

From crockett on Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 16:20:13

You'll do fine. 50 miles isn't that big of deal, especially on that island course. Last year I was the sweep for the 50-mile and brought up the rear, prodding and helping those in the rear. We all had a great time. No one died. Marathoners for some reason think 26-miles is a barrier. It isn't. It is all about pace and learning how to incorporate power walks into your race.

From tarzan on Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 16:45:19

Thanks Dave. I am not too worried about it - just a new distance to conquer. I've actually been told that in some ways the 50 miler is easier than the 50K because you only have to do the big hills once.

Power walking shouldn't be too much of a problem because I race walked my first few marathons. I just have to get back to walking more and work on uphills.

From crockett on Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 16:58:16

Yep, it is just a matter of being able to handle the time on your feet, keep moving, and don't spend a bunch of time at the aid stations. Yes, the two loop 50k has those hills, but over the course of the 50, all the ups and downs add up. The last few miles can be challenging. I'll be missing it this year, running in the Moab 100 on the same day.

From leslie on Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 17:14:51

You will be GREAT! I am so jealous! I will enjoy spending time training with you. How about Monday? How many miles are you planning on?

From tarzan on Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 17:43:58

I am planning on 13 miles on Sunday afternoon and 20-22 miles on Monday - maybe broken in 2 or 3 sessions.

From leslie on Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 17:47:22

Let me know where you are going and I will drive separately and join you for part of it, unless you are going to Layton or something. Very ambitious!
