Ran the RHPC Half marathon this morning.  I knew going into the race that I would not be able to PR since I had been battling both knee pain and being sick for a week, but wanted to do the run and put in as good an effort as I could with my health issues.

First 5.5 miles were uphill. Pinked 2 runners at mile 1 and another at mile 2 and figured that would be it.  We ran almost up to Vivian Park and I kept my pace just past the comfortable level on the uphills.  It was fun approaching the turnaround because I saw other runners from the race and was high fiving them and cheering them on.

After the turnaround I just tried to consistently run faster than comfortable to start getting used to pushing my pace.  I was glad for the cloud cover because it kept the race cooler.  I had extra water and gatorade because I didn't know how my lungs and throat would handle the running, but they seemed okay with drinking every 2 miles, so dumped any excess to lighten the load.

I was a bit concerned about never seeing Marion or Leslie - but figured they were big girls and knew the route.

Around mile 11 my lungs started hurting, but I figured I'd keep on pushing and finished under 2:30. If I was well I think I could have possibly pushed down below 2:20 and PR'd - but was okay with my efforts - especially through the uphill sections.

No great miles - but consistent and my body was okay with pushing - so I will start pushing my miles 2-3 times a week to start getting my speed down again.

It was great to meet you Maurine! That was a fun little get together/run! I had a blast and was excited to get to meet some of the bloggers I hadn't met yet. Great job on your time and effort! I wish we could all just feel 100% all of the time dangit!

You were awesome Maurine! I sometimes think starting with the uphills is great because then you get the downhill later, but you forget how tired your legs are going to get from the climbing.

It was so nice to see you again and get to chat a little!

It was great to see you. If I would have run the whole distance I would have tried to stick around, but I knew I was cheating on the course and so I stayed on my own. I hope the coughing isn't going to get worse. Take care of yourself!

Nice race, Maurine :) You are a trooper. Thought of this considering everything you're going through:

From my man Dean Karnazes: Run when you can, walk when you have to, crawl if you must. Just never give up!

I've coughed up some really lovely stuff this past hour or so. Either I shook things loose or I did myself in. We shall see.....

LOVE that quote, Benn!!!!

I'm going for the 'shook things loose' option! I hope it's true!! You did GREAT this morning and you have NO idea how great it was to see you after the turn around and get my high-5! I felt like a RHPC :) You're an amazing woman, keep up the hard work and you'll get that PR in no time!!!

Teena - I'm going to try. Will probably try and get a sub for nursery tomorrow because I feel like I was kicked in the chest and don't want to pass this on to my little kids.

From Smooth on Sat, Jul 11, 2009 at 18:40:59 from 71.36.87.34

Maurine, Tarzan woman!!! It was so good to see you. I am so proud of you when I saw you after the turn around. I told Karen to watch for you, Marion and Leslie. You were a real trooper for finishing that race. The temperature was nice with the cloud covering; but it's still an uphill with a headwind. You did awesome!

Now, please take care of that throat and chest. I'm with RAD, I think that run loosen things up a bit.

From Maurine/Tarzan on Sat, Jul 11, 2009 at 18:46:59 from 97.117.58.176

I sure hope so, Smooth. It has been one miserable week. However, I am very glad to see that I can still run and train now while being sick. Next week I am so looking to getting my mileage back to where I want it to be.

I'm actually thinking (no snickers please) next year of having fun and not racing long as much. Maybe just St. George, some half marathons and an ultra or two for fun. This year it seems like everything has to be geared around the 4 marathons.

Great race Maurine! You have been SO ill :) As always, it was the BEST to see you and spend time together :) Party running is pretty darn fun!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR COMING!!!! xoxoxoxox

From Maurine/Tarzan on Sun, Jul 12, 2009 at 15:39:15 from 97.117.58.176

Thanks again for a great race yesterday. The first 2 hours of the race were the only times I have felt good all week.

Allie - the knee seems to be doing better. I felt a little pain starting around 11 miles - but actually on the inside of the knee and not under the kneecap - so it may have just been from normal use (that knee gives me pain off and on since I had it operated on (gasp) nearly 30 years ago).
