Didn't want to risk slipping this close to the races, so went out to the Oval.  For a while I was the only person in the track/rink area, so ran in the dark.  After a mile or so, about 20 or so other runners started piling in and they turned on the lights.

As I was leaving, saw this really short lady and really tall lady coming in to the track, so visited with them.  One of them was going to 'lose her marbles' today as a way of tracking laps, so I passed on my lap counter as an easier method.

Maurine!!!! It was so good to see you this morning! THANKS for helping RAD not "loose her marbles". She operated the counter flawlessly...yes much easier and efficient way!

Have fun on your trip to the sunny south. I'm sooooo excited for you to be running w/ your daughter. Goofy Challenge here you come! :) :) :)

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU AND YOURS!!! :)

From Smooth on Sun, Jan 02, 2011 at 00:55:47 from 67.2.79.80

Oh, still laughing hard about the really short and really tall ones! :D

I can only imagine the legends born of people seeing us running together. I'm sure Smooth ends up being my 12 year old daughter :)

Thank you thank you thank you for the counter! I still think I've lost my marbles, but at least now I can keep track of my laps a little easier.

Good luck with the Goofy Challenge! I think I really want to try that one sometime, you'll have to tell me whether or not you like it or would recommended it to a thoroughly 'marbles lost' runner such as myself :)

I've thought I could make good money selling clickers there at the track.

Saturday is the half marathon (5:30 a.m. is the first wave - we probably don't start until almost 6:30 a.m.). Sunday is the marathon.

Second day of the Goofy Challenge. Ran the races with the thought that they needed to be treated as an ultramarathon. I'll write up a full race report on Tuesday. Legs are trashed. Probably shouldn't have wandered Downtown Disney last night and done Harry Potter today. Kind of sad - but I have made the decision to take a year off from marathons or longer. Going to focus on speeding up my pace.

I was going to do the same thing this year about marathons. Well, I was planning on running only one, but I change my mind way too often. Now the lure of long distance races is calling my name and I'm changing my plans again.

From RAD on Sat, Jan 15, 2011 at 20:17:55 from 67.172.229.125

I think getting better and then focusing on pace is a GREAT goal! It is a good idea to change thing up occasionally. I think our bodies get too used to just doing the same ol' thing all the time.

You are amazing for finishing this challenge, I can not even imagine how hard it must've been on your body, you definitely do have to be a little goofy to do it! :)

Taking a forced break.  Started getting sick on Tuesday and by Wednesday afternoon I was totally miserable.

On Thursday I did some phone calling and found an Urgent Care Center here in Richmond Hill, Georgia and got in to see a doctor.  Diagnosis - I am crazy.  Loved the bugged out look the doctor had after I mentioned all my symptoms and then said, "It might help to realize I ran a half marathon on Saturday and a marathon on Sunday."  She used to run marathons and asked me why I did them back to back.

Actual diagnosis - upper respiratory infection, sinusitis, and neck/upper back muscle swelling and stiffness. They gave me a breathing treatment to get my O sats up to 98 and a steroid injection.  Plus put me on an inhaler every 4 hours round the clock for the first day or so, flonase nasal steroid, mucinex, muscle relaxants, antibiotics & cough medication. Unfortunately, the round the clock inhaler treatments did not allow me to fall asleep until 5:30 a.m. (even with sleeping pills at 3:00 a.m.).

So sorry you are sick! Funny how you found a doctor clear over in Georgia that's a marathoner. I can just imagine the look on her face when you told her you did the Goofy Challenge while some serious infection is brewing in your respiratory system. Please try to get some sleep and rest and let the medications do the job and get better real soon.

Took an enforced leave of absence from running since I had been sick for a month and really wanted to get over it.  I think I am almost there now.  The turning point was my boss recommend a neti pot or the equivalent to clean out my sinuses.  I couldn't believe the amount of stuff oozing out of me the first night.  Two days later and my face is not hurting - so the sinusitis must be healing.

One mile walk with the dog.  Later, to the gym and did 3 miles on the treadmill. .5 mile warmup at 5 mph, followed by 2 miles at 6 mph, followed by 1/2 mile cooldown.  Then 30 minutes on the recumbent stationary bike just to be moving.  10 minute session in the sauna cleaned out more gunk.

1st day of speedwork this year. I have a lot of mental barriers I intend to conquer in 2011.

1 mile warmup at 12:00. Stopped to do some of the hip opening swings from the latest Runners World. The plan was to try and do .25 intervals at 7 mph but the brain mentally called it quits the first interval at .2 and at .18 the next interval. Changed up to 125 paces at 7 mph with reat intervals jogging at 4 mph for 100 paces. Repeat for 1.5 miles. Cooldown at 12 mm for .5.

10 minutes in sauna to clean out sinuses and lungs.

While cooking dinner for my son who was over doing laundry threw in 40 minutes of lower body and core training.

Allie - thanks - wish I was as fast as you. The sauna seems to help. Feeling a lot better - just a little congestion left.

Craig - I'm trying to get out of debt this year before my alimony ends, so can't afford too many races. I plan to volunteer for the races and might be pacing someone for part of the 100.

1 mile warmup.  Then I set out to do some miles at below 11 mm pace (my plans for January and February).  Mile 1  10:24   Mile 2  10:37   Mile 2 felt a lot harder than mile 1.

I know it is supposed to be beneficial to take a couple of weeks off from running each year to let your body heal, but I really hate going through the muscle adaptation and stiffness when I start up again.

Picked up my Muir Fresh Harvest bundle this afternoon.  Great stuff!  $35 for about $80 worth of fresh food.  And - I got a groupon today for $20 for $50 worth of food from Winder Dairy.

Easy run this afternoon with the dog.  I about had to drag her yesterday to do one mile in the snow - guess she remembered the pain from one of her earlier runs when she got salt in her paws continuously.  Today, I had to remind her we were doing a recovery run and slow down.

Managed to fit in Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred level 1 before hitting the shower and going to work at the temple. Still feel pathetically unfit and am using 2.5 pound weights (although it is only the first of her 3 interval sessions that beats me up). Wish the stupid video didn't have a long introduction you have to listen through each time.

1 mile warmup with the dog. 2 miles tempo work. .5 mile cooldown.

The miles were definitely easier than on Tuesday. Don't know if that was because Monday was speedwork day or because I went a couple of blocks farther down 7th before turning around.

Didn't achieve my running goals last week.  Had a mental slip due to some hurtful things my dad said.  Back on track today.

I don't think I'll ever love speed work but I  hope I will get to love the results of speed work.

1 mile warmup at 5 mph on the treadmill. Trying out some Nike Free shoes I snagged at the Factory Outlet Stores last week.  1.5 miles of intervals with 30-35 seconds at 8 mph followed by ~60 seconds at 4 mph.  I didn't break out of any of my fast interval sessions even though twice my mind tried to make me step off - so I am proud of that.  The last few intervals I had to do about 20-30 seconds longer at the slower pace before another fast interval.

The plan after that was to start at 7 mph and decrease my speed every .10 by .1, but the mind couldn't handle that - so ended up starting at 6 mph and working my way down.

Think I won't push too hard on my tempo days this week since I have a 5K this weekend. I know I am not ready for a PR attempt yet, but want to push and see how I feel my endurance is based upon weather and such and stuff.

1 mile warmup talking on the phone with my daughter.

3 miles tempo - wheels fell off the third mile and I did a bit of a pull-back for 25 steps every street crossing.  10:13 / 9:54 / 9:42.  I think the speed work on Mondays is starting to pay off helping my regular miles feel easier. Of course, I did hit a stop light every half mile, so got a bit of a recovery there.

1 mile cooldown running with the dog

Pre dinner - threw in the first two workouts that came with my kettle bells.  Using the 5 pound weight for now. Will move up to my 10 pound bell when it gets too easy.

Started out on an easy run yesterday afternoon and the left knee started having pains shoot through it.  Gave it a few more minutes and gave up and went home.  Decided to rest a couple of days from running.

Today I took the dog over to Wheeler Farm and we walked around the outside loop twice for about 3.5 miles.  The back section is really torn up from construction, and the sun was melting the ice - so the second loop was really muddy.

I hope your knee is ok. Has it been bothering you or is this something new?

I still have a weird little glob of 'gelatinous something' that moves back and forth in the ball of my right foot when I walk. It doesn't hurt and I can't feel it when I'm running. The doctor can't see anything in the x-rays.

Ran with a patella strap this morning and there was no knee pain. Don't know if that is from resting or the strap - but I'll take it.

Need to remember to put vaseline on my feet when running in my old FiveFingers.  I think the insides are starting to rub behind my big toes raw.

Getting better about starting the week off with speed. Not as many mental grumbles. 1 mile warmup at 5 mph.  Today I did 1 minute intervals at 7.5 mph followed by 2 minute recoveries at 4.3 mph.  2.25 miles worth of interval work.

.75 cooldown.

1 mile walk in the morning with the dog.

My right hip and buttock have been bothering me for several days as well as my left knee, so I finally gave in and set up an appointment this afternoon for the chiropractor.  When he started working on my back, glutes and piriformis, I realized I had waited too long to get in there. He gave me some stretches to do to try and keep the piriformis loose and told me to quit sitting on my wallet - especially now that I am working two IT jobs where I sit a lot.

It was windy out, so I headed to the gym for a treadmill workout because I wanted to work on pace some more and that is hard to do with a headwind.  1 mile warmup at 5 mph. Then I kicked it up to 7 mph and every .10 mile I dropped the speed .1 mph.  When I got to 5.9 mph, I kicked it up to 6.7 mph and started all over again. Finally, at a  total of 3.75 miles, did a cooldown. Lots of stretching and hip flexibility work afterwards.  Another mile walk with the dog as a final cooldown. Iced the hip.

Went to the chiropractor again yesterday afternoon to have him work on my right piriformis and left knee.  The left knee is almost back to where I want it to be. The piriformis, right glute and lower back were all really inflamed, so I took the day off running and did lots of icing and stretching because I wanted to do three medium to long runs over my four day weekend.

Drove to Draper this morning and did the Porter Rockwell Trail out to Point of the Mountain and the Draper Canal Trails on the way back.  The wind was awful.  Headwind the first three miles, then side wind to the turnaround that made me have to run canted to the side to stay upright.  Much easier on the way back.  Still building up endurance for the year, so did 3 minutes running 1 minute walking the entire time. Got through four more PMP Prep podcasts while running.

Thanks, ladies. I was really glad the wind was on the uphill and heading out portion - because it would have been miserable facing it the second half of the run.

I really had planned on running the Jeremy Ranch Road today, but one of my co-workers spoke to a friend who lived up there yesterday and he said between new snow and drifting it would have not been packed down at all - so maybe next weekend.

Now - what for tomorrow? Wonder if the Oval will be open for running.... Or do I do the JRP?

Absolutely no energy the last four miles of my run.  I went to the Oval after working on my second job most of the morning.  Plans were for 12-13, but I just lost my motivation.

Did stop to talk to say hello to a guy that had lapped me almost every time around (can't stand those people!) and asked him if he was Walter - and he was. Poor guy had spent the whole night snowplowing and was getting in his miles before sleeping.

Also talked to two other guys doing constant laps.  The one guy, after complimenting me on running so many laps, started off with, "We are ultrarunners training for a race next month." He looked shocked when I said, "And I will be providing your overnight aid station at the ranch." so - then we talked ultrarunning.  They were just finishing up 30 miles and going to do at least 40-42. They are doing the 100 mile option at Buffalo Run.

Time to get back to work. Having a second income is nice - but I need to find a good balance between work and life.

Finally finished a portion of a stressful project at work that has occupied me 7 days a week for 4 weeks and decided I needed a break tonight. I also decided that it was time to make up my mind whether I would run the Ogden Half Marathon (even as a training run) or not.

So - ran 1 mile warmup with the dog and then headed to the gym.  I ran 12.3 miles more on the treadmill. I didn't die at the end so I will approach the Odgen Half as a training run that might potentially turn into a PR effort halfway through if I am feeling good.

Good stretching. Good food.  Now on to my second job.

More treadmill miles. I read about Jeff Galloway's participation in an iPhone app call Ultimate 10K and started that this week.  Of course, it is only 3 days a week and I need to move more than that.  Today was quarter mile intervals at 7.0  mph on the treadmill with walking breaks.

After that, I did a heavy leg workout.  Lot less stressed now.  Ready to get back to work.  I'll admit that this two jobs bit is tiring - but has come in handy with having to buy tickets to go to Georgia next month with my son to say goodbye to my grandchildren.

Kelli - thanks for saying hi. I don't spend much time on FRB anymore - two jobs is taking most of my free time and I've been pretty half hearted about working out.

How are things going? Doing okay? Running well?

I know, I never have the time either---so I am wasting it right now touching bases with everyone I love!

I did not know you were working two jobs. YIKES, I have a hard enough time with one part time job!

I am good. Just barely getting back to running after this darn nagging injury and physical therapy. I did not take a ton of time off completely, but I have felt NOT RIGHT since that darn 50!!! I should have stopped then and there and let it heal. But, you know how we are!

Yeah - in addition to my day job where I do product management and am a database administrator (50-65 hours or so each week), I have worked since January as the head of Quality Assurance for a start-up company that develops functionality apps for Kindles.

Keeps me busy. I usually take a couple of breaks between jobs and during the evening to work out - but am enjoying the work challenges right now.

Hope you get over your injuries. I am still in awe of your 50 Miler.

very consistent! how is everything feeling?

From Maurine/Miles on Fri, Jul 01, 2011 at 12:55:45 from 63.255.172.2

Not bad. Just mad at myself for letting myself get out of shape and struggling my way back in there. Having to alternate running and walking as I work my way back.

I honestly don't think I will be able to get back to serious distance running until I am either only working one job or my full-time job gets down below 55 hours.

I would still like to get back to 6 miles per day and work on getting my speed better while I am in this total chaos mode.

Have you had to drop most of your race plans for the summer?

From allie on Fri, Jul 01, 2011 at 13:18:22 from 24.10.191.18

i know the feeling of a busy work schedule -- but you are doing great. just do whatever you can fit in and stay consistent and you'll get it back. i'm struggling to work my way back too. it's all about having patience (easier said than done) :)

i had to drop des news, which i was extremely bummed about but i am getting over it. there was just too much risk involved. but since i won't be doing that marathon, i have adjusted my plans so that i can get in shape for TOU. i will probably start out with a bunch of 5k's and then run a half marathon or two in late july and early august. TOU is usually my third or fourth marathon of the year, but this year it will be my first. it's shaking my confidence a bit, but who knows, maybe it is for the best.

best of luck to you as you get back into your training. do you have any races coming up? i know you have done park city in the past...

I'm doing the Dirty Girl Run tomorrow at Wheeler Farm and a couple of other mud runs.

I'm debating on the Park City Half as a motivator. No marathons this year - my mind and body were getting burnt out.

Easy MilesMarathon Pace MilesThreshold MilesVO2 Max MilesTotal Distance
4.000.000.000.004.00

Volunteered and then ran the Dirty Girls 4 mile race at Wheeler Farm this morning.  Lots of fun in the mud.  I ran where it was possible, but lot of times you were standing around waiting for a turn at an obstacle or walking through some deep water and mud where running could have potentially turned an ankle because of knee deep holes you couldn't see.

I was in the very last wave and didn't start running until almost 10:45 - so the course was even more chopped up.  The mud was fun.  The course was fun.  We had to climb over hay bales, run through tires, climb over walls, crawl under webbing, climb over webbing walls, hike through snow melt water and mud, climb over pipes, climb through pipes, rinse and repeat.

I like these runs because they are not timed and fun.  I'll do more of them.  My only complaints would be that they needed to spread the mud obstacles out to avoid backups and why do people do these runs when they walk around the obstacles to avoid them.  Oh - and lots of people entered as teams - and wanted to stick together as teams which blocked the paths and slowed down the obstacles.

Hey,Smooth!

I'm doing well - except I let myself get overweight and out of shape this year and am starting my way back.

I'm not racing much this year. I have a couple of mud runs on the calendar and that is about it.

Trying to modify my running style and make it more efficient.

Busy working two jobs and my full-time job is between 60-70 hours a week lately.

How are you doing? Anything new in your life?

From Smooth on Thu, Jul 14, 2011 at 00:53:35 from 67.2.104.79

hey Maurine ~ Glad you are doing well and keeping busy as ever! Wow! Don't know how to juggle two jobs and everything else. Are you still working in the temple on Wed night?

Glad you are focusing on efficient running form. I need to work on that constantly too!

This has been a year full of family stuff: a new grand baby in January, another one on the way in Aug, a son got married in April, our youngest son is leaving for his mission in Taiwan in couple of weeks. Life has been good! I am running the Grand Slam again this year, well, hope to anyway! My next run is this Sat at Bryce where I hope to see Leslie! I have never run Bryce before. Should be a beautiful run.

When and where is your next mud run? sounds like lots of fun!

Things just keep looking up for you!! Nice work.

From Maurine/Miles on Sat, Jul 16, 2011 at 16:10:25 from 97.117.78.2

Rachel,

There doesn't seem any point in going to group runs and then running alone because everyone is so much faster. It seems a waste of time to have to drive that far just to run alone like I always do.

I hope you had a good time.

From RAD on Sat, Jul 16, 2011 at 16:13:46 from 76.27.16.189

I was running with my sister at about an 11:30ish pace. So, I was looking forward to running WITH you...see? Really WITH you! It would've been a nice relaxing pace for you :)

However, I do understand about the drive vs. company factor. I had to convince someone to run extra so I had company after my sister left me, or I would've been alone the majority of the time and that was depressing for me. I just like to see my 'regulars' at the race, even if it is just for some chow afterward.

From Maurine/Miles on Mon, Aug 08, 2011 at 16:29:09 from 63.255.172.2

Les - yes! What do you think the total mileage might be? I may kill myself doing Little Cottonwood again afterward.

Steve - yes! The first mile isn't too steep but after that there are several tough inclines. I think I only once ran it from bottom to top and that was a few years and 20 pounds ago. I like accomplishing it - makes me feel like I earned the downhill fun. Only once did I get totally creeped out because I was alone on the trail and the spirit told me to take the road back down. Usually there are a ton of people on that trail - so I followed that prompting.

From leslie peterson on Mon, Aug 08, 2011 at 16:38:00 from 71.195.193.128

From Smooth on Mon, Aug 08, 2011 at 16:47:23 from 67.2.98.112

From Maurine/Miles on Mon, Aug 08, 2011 at 16:53:10 from 63.255.172.2

Smooth - they are paved trails. However, a lot of the time I can run alongside on the equestrian trail to get some trail time.

Another option I like to get trail time (without snakes) is Jeremy Ranch Road - nice and wide and dirt and gravel.

From Smooth on Mon, Aug 08, 2011 at 16:55:50 from 67.2.98.112

Thanks for the heads up. Is Jeremy Ranch Rd up by Park City?

From Maurine/Miles on Mon, Aug 08, 2011 at 16:57:46 from 63.255.172.2

Yes. So you get altitude training. Take the exit before the Outlet Mall, head left, turn left again after you go under the freeway, then a right up the hill and you work drive around the golf course and we see a ton of cars parked on a road to the left hand side. Get out and run (7 miles each way with lots of hills).

Been wearing a boot on my right ankle since Saturday hoping my tendon issues will heal and that I caught them earlier than last year.

Timing coincided with a business trip to Wichita - so didn't have to worry about taking running gear along.  I was a bit worried Monday night and Tuesday because my left calf was rock hard - I've heard horror stories about blood clots from flying. Tuesday night I walked for about 30 minutes after work and then after dinner did 45 minutes on the stationary bike at the hotel gym and then did some quad and hamstring weight training.

Wednesday morning the leg was back to normal - so the movement must have cleared out the edema (or whatever it was).

Tonight I ran 3 miles and then took the dog for a 1 mile cooldown jog. Going to ice the ankle and then back in the boot.  I'm hoping that if I wear the boot while I am walking around during the day that I can keep up my training and still have the ankle heal.

Thanks, ladies. It was supposed to be a 15 miler, but the heat drained me and I ran out of water and a huge headwind started with about 5 miles to go. I finally hitched a ride the last 2 miles because I wanted to be smart instead of stubborn.

Smooth - love my new podiatrist! He taped my foot in what is called a modified low-dye taping and it has stopped the tendon from hurting. If it keeps up - he will create orthotics that should permanently help it.

Signed up this week to run the Suncrest Half Marathon.  It looked like it would be tough half and I was right about that.

I'll write more in my other blog, but suffice it to say that the course  had 3357 feet of elevation gain and 3389 feet of descent (could have fooled me on the last one).  A good mix of trails and roads.  Lots of great views of both the Salt Lake and Utah Valleys.

There may be a tougher half in Utah - but I'm not sure what it would be.

Wore my Hoka Mafates. They are very comfortable to run in - but I wish I wouldn't get blisters on my big toes every time I run in them. Got some large ones this time even with putting blister packs on the toes and duct tape on top of that.

Two more miles with the dog.  Going to count my walking miles until the end of the year because I need to start spending a lot of time on my feet in preparation for Across the Years 48 hour race.

Added two more miles tonight to get into a 40 mile week.

Nice job!!! Mayne you should get some of those toe socks. The ones that fit on your feet like gloves. Ever since I started wearing them, I don't get blisters on my toes anymore. The ones I wear are made by injinji.

From Maurine/Miles on Sun, Sep 11, 2011 at 12:41:17 from 198.228.209.126

Thanks everyone. It is a pretty course but I am not sure I want to suffer that much in a half.

With regards to the Hokas and blisters - toe socks would not make a difference. The uppers have a seam that rubs against the shoe side of the big toe. I'm doing more research of methods to cope with the issue.

Easy MilesMarathon Pace MilesThreshold MilesVO2 Max MilesTotal Distance
13.600.000.000.0013.60

Can't say that I actually 'raced' today - but had a great day out on Antelope Island.  I had originally signed up to race the half marathon, but instead turned it into a volunteer opportunity and ran as sweeper.  Started 10 minutes after the race and figured I'd eventually catch up to people.  It was a gorgeous day on the island - sunny and warm, but not hot.

The trail was overgrown.  Running through the grassy sections was kind of cool. Grasses taller than my head and only a tiny path through it that you could see.  The sunflower sections was not as cool - they were a bit painful and scratchy when they hit you.

Saw 5 buffalo after the bushwhack section down to the Mountain View Trail but those were the only ones close to me.  At the first aid station - around mile 5, I asked where the last runners were. The one volunteer told me they were two miles ahead.  Knowing most volunteers - I figured that meant about a half mile or so. When I got to the aid station at Frary Peak, I could see the last runners only about 100 yards out, (I knew they couldn't be that far ahead), so hung around that aid station for 5 minutes or so to give them time to get ahead.  Started walking a lot more to keep behind them and finally caught up about mile 12 and they told me to go ahead.  They looked good - so I just ran it in.

Helped drive runners back to the start line and then helped Jim and Karen Skaggs pack up the truck and Jim drove me back to the start.

Neat experience as I got back on the main island road - an antelope walked very slowly across the road about 10 feet in front of me.

From Maurine/Miles on Tue, Oct 18, 2011 at 11:29:03 from 97.117.59.212

Smooth - just relax and have a good time. Plan to drink something every 15 minutes to stay hydrated. Take S-caps every hour - especially once it gets hot. Have a variety of food options available - you won't know what you can tolerate until the time is there. (I couldn't eat anything for 20 miles). I enjoyed using trekking poles occasionally in the second half for a break on the legs. Do your best to care for hot spots before they become blisters. Avoid chafing. Change your shoes in the second half if you need to. (Sometimes a bigger pair because your feet swell). Have fun!

From Kelli on Tue, Oct 18, 2011 at 14:15:58 from 71.219.83.151

What do you like for the last 30 miles?? I was not able to eat a thing, although I wish I had actually tried! I looked at it, and just could not do it. SO, we are trying to figure out what to bring for Scott. i am merely basing it off what I have seen offered at my ultras and when I have volunteered. SUGGEST AWAY!

Smooth, we will have LOTS of food, we will bring you some.

Good advice on the s-caps. I told Scott to take them every 30 minutes, do you think that is too often? Again, I screwed up with those on my race and paid for it!

From Smooth on Tue, Oct 18, 2011 at 14:24:20 from 174.27.208.222

Maurine ~ THANK YOU SO MUCH! I would not have thought of drinking every 15 min. I will bring a handheld bottle. Thanks for the reminder about taking care of hot spot and taking S-cap. I have a tendency to cramp so that will be critical.

I also have NO clue what to eat. I am packing what Davy suggest in his runner handbook. Food I normally eat at home require cooking or reheating. So, yah SUGGEST AWAY!!!

Can't wait to see you on Fri.

From Maurine/Miles on Tue, Oct 18, 2011 at 14:56:48 from 97.117.59.212

Most of what I packed my body rejected because of the heat. Things to consider for the last 30 miles - different flavor of gatorade/powerade, I liked the vanilla EFS gu. Ensure or carnation instant breakfast. I'd recommend some trail mix with a variety of stuff - because something in it might work. Hard candy really grabbed me when someone gave me a couple of pieces. Chicken broth.

My crew had instructions once it got hot to have ice ready to stick in a bandana and my hat to help keep my body temperature cool.

I love the belts with 4 bottles in them because we had 2 sets of bottles and I would have my sister have them filled with water, gatorade and ensure and I could just drop the empties and grab what interested me. I have one belt that you could use Smooth if you didn't want to carry a hand held. They each hold 8 ounces.

In the beginning my sister drove 4 miles ahead - as the day went on, the drops got down to 3, 2, and then about 1.5 miles. It was nice to have my crew (my sister, son or Jim Kern) run out to walk me in and ask what I needed. Oh - and they would bring me a wet washcloth - a treasure.

My daughter and grandkids made different signs and my sister would rotate what was in the window and add window paints to give me something to look at as I came up to the vehicle.

The worst part is the 13 mile of straight road. That was when tunes became a life saver. Don't listen to music until you have to because you will have lots of time to listen.

I appreciated my crew taking notes of what I ate and potty stops and such. Useful in case you want to do it again and can learn from it.

From Smooth on Tue, Oct 18, 2011 at 15:26:07 from 174.27.208.222

WOW those are great suggestions! I'd never thought of any of that. I do have a 4 bottles fuel belt, I will add that to my list. Ice pack bandana is such an excellent idea. I think my YW Pres. friend gave me a headband that is filled with some kind of gel that when wet can be chilled. I will have to look for that and include it in first-aid kit.

None of my family will be there to crew or support. Most of my kids are out of states and don't even know I'm running it. My husband has to work and will be bored to tears. But Wendy, my friend is so AWESOME to sacrifice a whole day to drive and crew me and Lowell.

Appreciate so much your suggestions and words of wisdom! :)

From Kelli on Tue, Oct 18, 2011 at 17:28:15 from 71.219.83.151

Thanks for the suggestions. I had not thought about cold washcloths, I bet scott would like that. We just dunk his hat in water instead of doing the ice thing. Lucky for us it is going to be cooler than you had it Maurine!!!

Had an enjoyable fall run at the Halloween Half Marathon today.  The route was gorgeous and lots of downhill.  I avoided pushing at any point because I have a 50K next Saturday and want to recover in time.

Thanks to Leslie and Harold Peterson for picking up the packets in the packet fiasco yesterday and for Harold taking us up the back route so we could sit in the warm car and wait for the race to start.  Looks like more uncertainties with the buses not knowing where to drop off runners.

Fun to watch all the different costumes. Leslie was a clown and I was a ladybug.  I don't think the wings help my aerodynamics.

Good thing it was a cool day - because only got offered sports drink once and it was watered down. Other aid stations were already out of it.

I'd like to do it again - but only if the RD learns to organize a bit better.

Hi Smooth! Have a nice day.

Taper week this week - but more than I had planned.  My brother-in-law got knocked off a ladder on Tuesday and broke his back and several ribs and I have been going to the hospital to help out and visit in my spare time.

Tomorrow - 50K on Antelope Island.  Bring on the crappy weather!

Not one of my best days.  But I move on.

Feeling good, Allie. Thanks. The endurance is starting to come back and I am happy about that. Also trying to eat healthy because I found I have high cholesterol.

How are you? Have you scheduled the wedding? Will it be during a marathon. :)

From allie on Fri, Nov 11, 2011 at 07:36:20 from 24.10.191.18

Four hour race at the Olympic Oval in Kearns today. Went with Leslie Peterson.  Got to visit with the incredible Rachel - attempting to pass her goal for the year by finishing 13 miles either walking or using a knee scooter because she has a broken foot.  I finished my 18 miles just as the race time ended.

Good day - but I am stiff and tired.
