Smooth - its not bad. It beats going out to the gym some days when I don't feel like dragging out after a long day. Although some of the time I just want to slap the trainer on the side of the head. One second he yells, "Great Balance", the next second, "You're kind of shaky there".

Walked one mile in the morning with the dog.

I want to run again - so am planning to run 3 days a week and do other cardio 3-4 days a week. For 2 weeks I will do 6 miles on Tuesday, 6 miles on Thursday and 10 miles on Saturday at 75-80% MHR.

PM - one mile warmup running with the dog.  Dropped her off and did some quick stretching. Then headed for another 5 miles.

Used the heart rate monitor.  I was amazed how quickly my fitness dropped in just a few weeks.  I want to keep my effort easy until this Achilles heals. I plan to do lots of half marathons this year, St. George, and the Pony Express 50 miler.  Even if I don't race (just run races) this year, I am hoping to get strong enough to be ready to rock and roll in 2011.

It was pretty shocking how slow I was having to go to stay below 80% MHR.  I am hoping it will come back quickly.  The right achilles quit twinging in the right leg just past 2.5 miles.  Couple of twinges in the left achilles, but not many.  Interestingly enough - at the turnaround at 3.5 miles, my heart rate started dropping and my legs started feeling tired.  Last mile the heart rate was up again, but it is mainly uphill. .3 mile cooldown jog.

13:55/13:41/14:35/14:24/13:33/14:46 (I know - speed is really pathetic).

I am not happy with my fitness. One year ago I PR'd in a 5K and I feel like I am in horrible shape in comparison now.  Gained 10 pounds this year and know I also lost muscle mass.  My new theme is going to be "No More FLOPPY".

Floppy stands for how I am feeling about myself right now.

F - Fat

L - Lazy

O - Out of Shape

P - Physically Unfit

P - Pathetic

Y - Yucky

Gonna get fit, eat clean, gain muscle, and stay healthy in 2010.

Took a break and vacuumed the house.

30 minutes strength training on the Wii Fit.

Took another break to mop all the other floors and eat dinner.

1.7 miles running with the dog, then dropped her off and finished up for a total of 4.6 miles. Achilles loosened up after the initial run.

Not doing the slam this year. Too many injuries last year, so am using 2010 to rebuild strength.

Teena - I do like the WiiFit (most of the time). Right now I am working on opening up all the exercises - after a while I am sure I will do less and less of easy or useless ones (like I don't see the point of running in place when I can run outside).

I had great plans to get a run in yesterday, but ended up working 16 hours and when the choice came down to running vs eating and sleeping - I chose the latter.

Got off early from the temple tonight because a boy threw up in the font and they had to close the baptistry down.  Took the dog out for a 1.7 mile run. Dropped her off, took a potty break, then finished up for a total of 5.3 miles.

Now I need to wind down and it is 10 p.m.  Good thing I am off tomorrow for my son's wisdom teeth removal.

Twilight wanted to go for a run with me this morning, so we did 3 miles and back. She didn't think ahead that running in this new snow would mean a bath when we got back.  She was dragging at the end of the run, but is not running around like crazy and growling trying to get her doggy smell back to how she likes it.

Tried to keep my heart rate between 75-80%, but gave up part way home because I couldn't run slow enough to do so (what an experience).  I think it is a combination of the crappy air and my last run being only 10 hours ago.

I had great plans to do a long run yesterday, but was in charge of a new release that went out at work yesterday.  I started getting calls off an on from 2:00 a.m. until around 5:00 a.m. and then had to be in the office at 8.  Came home for a couple of hours in the afternoon to nap and then back at work until 10.  Needless to say - no workout.

Took the dog for a 1.7 mile walk this morning and then took her along to the office with me.  I finished up most of the testing by early afternoon, so came home and relaxed for a bit and then did a 3.3 mile walk.  Played with the GPS function on an app on my new iPhone and it was .1 mile different than my Garmin, but they were pretty comparable.  I don't want to use it often because it really sucked the battery down, but nice to know I can use it in case of an 'emergency run'.

Stretching now - WiiFit later.

Still some pressure on at work, but I feel like a huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders.

I was wide awake before my alarm went off at 5 and headed out the door for a run. So - following Allie's plan - I did 5 miles at 5.

I am going to blog more about this in my Adventures in Running blog, but have been working on heart rate training the past couple of months.  I quit using my Garmin except on long runs (I know all the distances around my house) because I was feeling like a slug when I ran. Trying to keep my heart rate between 75-80% on daily runs and 65-76% on long runs was making me so slow that it depressed me to see my speed.  As a matter of fact, on Saturday I was running some 16 minute miles.  I just felt so out of shape and couldn't run slow enough to keep my heart rate in teh proper range.

Saturday made me start to suspect that it might be the heart rate monitor's fault and not mine.  I have been using the cheapest Polar that I had bought a year ago and decided to read the book on the new, expensive Polar that my son and ex-husband bought me for Christmas.  Using the new monitor this morning, I actually was able to run and had to push a little to get into the range.  Last week I was running 5 miles on about 67 minutes, today I was back to somewhere under 1 hour and probably closer to 57 minutes.  That is a big difference.

Hi Maurine, Thanks for the nice welcoming message. We might be pretty close in our running speed, but I'd wager you can go faster longer! I am truely amazed at how fast most of the bloggers on this site are, and they all seem so extremely friendly and nice.

I do most of my running on a treadmill, but try to go for a long run outside once a week. I live in the avenues, and my outside runs are usually from my house towards the capital building or up city creek canyon a ways. In warmer weather I try to do trail running once a week - seems gentler on my cranky old legs than pavement!

Where do you usually run? Do you both live and work in Sandy? I'm glad you found time for a run today, your work schedule this week sounds like it was pretty hectic!

Anyway, thanks for writing. I hope we both have time to get in some nice runs next week. :) - Adele

How are you this week??

From Maurine/Miles on Tue, Feb 02, 2010 at 15:17:11 from 63.255.172.2

Marion -

I am in survival mode right now. I am working way too many hours at work and am under a great deal of stress there. I am also very worried about my daughter and her family and that is adding to the stress. I can't find any motivation to do anything in my few free hours and am afraid if I did do any workouts that I would injure myself again. Plus the achilles has been a bit tender.

So - no posting because I don't want to whine.

Work and family have been very stressful.  I have not been able to motivate myself to work out even though I know it would help, but was in survival mode.

Tonight I ran 5 miles - the first 3 with the dog.  Stretched.  While watching tv I did an upper body workout and then the ab workout from the February issue of Runner's World.  I will be hurting tomorrow, but this helped the stress level.

Trying to get motivated again.  My achilles in the right ankle is still bothering me and my left ankle has been stiff and achy.  I think it is a combination of cold, old, out of shape, and overweight.

I'm going to go back to a combination of heart rate training and pace training.  I will do my recovery runs and long runs using the HRM.  Other runs are going to be using the Garmin pace calculator.  I was just running too slow doing heart rate training and it was very depressing.

So - for the remainder of February, I will run M/W/F for 5 miles keeping my pace under 12 MM.

Going to try to get up early and get a run in before 6. Leslie is picking me up at 6:30 a.m. to drop me off at the airport.

I meant to get up early yesterday and run before Leslie picked me up to go to the airport - but I lost my motivation while laying in bed - and didn't.

Shortly after Leslie dropped me at the airport, I found out my connecting flight from Atlanta to Savannah, Georgia was cancelled.  They were predicting 6 inches of snow in Savannah and recommended I go home and try again on Saturday - but the weather was not looking good then.

I took my chances and flew to Atlanta.  It was just barely starting to snow, but all flights the rest of the day were cancelled or soon to be.  I decided to rent a car - highway robbery for one way rentals.  The cheapest place I could find was over $250 with discounts, some were over $400.  What should have been a 4 hour drive took 6.5 hours.  Never a break in the snow and lots of accidents all over the place.

Today we did some shopping and then I mixed up a bunch of bread.  I took off on a run and my grandkids followed after trying to catch me on their bikes.  They finally caught me 4 1/2 miles later shortly before the Walmart we were heading to.  We got separated and I ended up running home and they hung in the shopping center for a while.

Ran along a pretty highway - swamplands on every side. We passed over the Okeechokee River (or something like that). A lot of the way I could run on a grassy shoulder.  It was cool out - but all the snow had melted from the day before and a lot of the time it was sunny.  Total of 11 miles round trip.  Much easier running without the effects of altitude.

No running today.  We ended up going to Tybee Island and I ran a little in the sand and convinced them all to climb to the top of the Tybee lighthouse (189 stairs).

When my son-in-law gets up for work tomorrow I will try and run then.  Hopefully we will get the kids in school soon. They are awful bored after two weeks of no school.

Quads were very sore today after the stair climb yesterday.  We were all doing a little whining when going up and down stairs.

The grandkids are really bored.  The stupid judge in North Carolina still has not signed the custody papers, so they can't get the kids into school in Georgia.  It has been 2 1/2 weeks and they are actually wanting to get into school.

A little before noon we came up with a plan.  Sent the kids off on their bikes to ride the 5.5 miles to Wally World.  We met them there and got more decorations for their rooms and I bought the kids and Jenn each some Wii games. After lunch, I started the run back home along the Atlantic Coastal Highway.  Brad and Elise caught up after .5 miles and then Elise took off. Brad stayed back to talk to me and pushed me to go a little faster than usual.

Ran around my daughter's subdivision more.  I have covered every road at least once.  Another 5.5 miles.  Weather warmed up 10 degrees while I was running.  Finally getting pretty outside.

My daughter and I got our first time alone the entire trip when my son-in-law came home early from work.  We went back down to River Street and bought a peacock stained glass window I couldn't get off my mind all week.  And some pralines and other southern fattening food. Dropped the stuff at their townhouse, then we went to Sticky Fingers for some delicious barbecue.  (We weren't impressed with the other food, but the ribs were to die for).  Then we each grabbed some books and found a corner to sit in at Barnes and Noble and read.

Homemade pizza for dinner and then a Wii tournament as our version of the Olympics.  Our goal was to have everyone get together and play together.  I bought some sinful caramel and chocolate covered apples as Good Sportsmanship awards and we gave out money for Gold, Silver and Bronze medals.  Everyone had fun together and no one got mad.  We only had to tell Elise once to shut down her phone.

Another bright sunny day today.  I did an 11 mile run through the city and on some back roads.  The roads are nice and soft on the shoulder and I can do a lot of running on the grass/dirt as long as I avoid swampy sections.  My daughter lives only a few miles from the ocean, so see lots of swamps right off the road. Temps increased 20 degrees while I ran. I was in shorts and a short sleeved shirt today and got plenty warm at that.  High 60's or low 70's now.

I was actually looking on Map My Run at a run listed in one of the neighboring cities.  It sounded good until I read the part about poisonous snakes and alligators and watch where you are stepping to avoid them.

The family is off at family counseling, so I did laundry and packed my clothes.  Also walked to the store (another mile or so) and got some blister pads because I ended up with a big blood blister on my left big toe, for some reason.

My daughter and her husband are going on a date tonight and I am taking the grandkids out to dinner.  I've spoiled them both and they both seem to like me (at least I don't get referred to as 'he/him' or 'she/her' like they do for their dad and stepmother.

Everyone wants to take me to the airport tomorrow.  Much better weather than when I came.

Went out to lunch at Epic this afternoon with my boss/friend to celebrate my new title of Business Analyst and to celebrate my company surviving me daily for 6 years.

Took Twilight out after work for a 1 mile warmup walk and heard Steve Ashbaker call me as I passed Chevron.  Visited with him for a couple of minutes and then headed home to drop off the dog.  As luck would have it, I got a couple of emergency calls from work and was held up another 10 minutes or so fixing the problems.

At that point I decided to just run down 7th East for 2 1/2 miles and back.  Started out at about 11:30mm. Just after the mile mark I started feeling my stomach complain about lunch, so headed over towards Gold's Gym and passed Steve A - already on his return run. I ran 2 1/2 miles at Golds on the treadmill starting at 5.0 mph and increasing .1 every 15 minutes.  Ran home afterwards.  I was glad I stopped at the gym because I had to take several breaks and ended up running home a lot lighter than I went out.

Now I am drinking hot chocolate made from almond milk, chocolate protein powder and strawberry flavoring.

Still eating healthy after 3 days. Even turned down pie and chocolate covered macadamia nuts at work.

Steve - the Achilles never quit hurting - just got hurting less. That is why my mileage has been so low and sporadic this year. It takes about 3 miles of running until the achilles loosens up. Some days I just force myself to run. However, things started going downhill on the achilles again last week.

Went to a new podiatrist today because my ankle has been hurting so much that I could only walk with limping a lot of the time the last couple of weeks.  I began suspecting in January that the previous doctor had misdiagnosed me, but kept trying to heal myself.  I also suspected that whatever the problem was, it would end up with me being booted.

This doctor looked at a bunch of xrays and did strength tests on my ankle. Then he started probing and when he pushed on a spot near the inside ankle bone I about jumped out of the seat.  Tapping with a reflex hammer sent numb tingles up my leg and down to my toes.  Diagnosis: tendonitis of the Posterior Tibialis Tendon.  I am wearing a boot for a couple of weeks and then have an ankle brace to wear when not booted for the Buffalo Run on March 27th (I might end up walking the 25K), then back in the boot.  Plus icing and vitamin I 3x per day.

Felt so good to walk without pain!

Walked the dog 1 mile this afternoon.  Probably a bit too far and too fast because the foot started hurting.

Tonight I went to the gym and did 50 minutes upper body & core workout and 70 minutes on the stationary bike.

We started week 2 of the 100 pushup and 200 situp challenges this week.

I've made it 7 days without sugar and most processed foods (no junk food at all).

Today was the day to try running without the boot.  I put on the brace

and started out with the dog.  It took a while of walking to get my sea

legs back, but then started jogging.  I decided to be safe and just

run/walk around my condo complex and had to call it quits after 2

miles.  Too much pain in the ankle - but it is actually in the anterior

tibialis tendon which started indicating it was injured as the posterior

tibialis tendon started healing.  Made the decision that I could not do

the Buffalo Run.  Boo Hoo!

After my failed attempt to run last weekend, I switched to a DNS on the Buffalo Run this year and switched over to being a volunteer.  I figured it would help me with my disappointment and depression over missing another race after all the times that occurred last year.

I worked for a few hours on Saturday morning and then headed up to the race.  As I was driving I started getting a little melanocholy thinking that it was one year ago that I DNF’d on the race course and remembering how that broke my heart at the time.

I ended up out on Antelope Island around 2 p.m. because they said they would need more volunteers near the end.  After visiting for a few minutes, I started trying to find ways to help out.  The finish area was running out of water and the White Rock Bay aid station was closing down, so I hiked over there (only a few hundred yards) and shouldered one of the full water jugs and hobbled back with it to the finish area.  It was pretty funny, here I was congratulating runners on finishing their incredible efforts and yet a lot of them were worried about me walking around in a boot.  By the time I had taken three trips back with water, I was pretty soaked.  Then I taught the aid station how strong sports drink was supposed to be.  They were watering it down so much nobody wanted to drink it.

I then noticed that the 50K runners were having to walk back uphill to the White Rock Aid station to get their drop bags, so started several trips that the volunteers then joined in with me on and carted back all the bags.  The last trip back a couple of runners came up and took all the stuff from me.  They said they were tired of feeling guilty about me hobbling around in a cast.

Lots of runners to visit with around the finish area.  I talked with Celeste Collman for a while and also Twinkies (Matt) and Jun (Craig) from the FRB.  I also met Steve P from the blog for the first time.  Matt was looking great for having finished a 50 miler.  I saw Celeste shivering in a chair at the finish line while waiting for her brother and went and got my blanket for her.  She was excited to have it since she had lent her blanket to someone else.

While taking a break for a minute, I heard someone say, “Maurine, what did you do to your leg?”  I looked down and there was a cute runner huddled in a chair by me.  I knew who she was, but couldn’t put it together.  It was Erika from the FRB (Josse’s sister).  We visited for a little bit and then I realized the woman sitting next to her in an awesome green hat was her mother, Karen, who I met at the RHPC half marathon last summer.  We visited off and on as I passed them for the next half hour or so.

Jim Skaggs, the Race Director, sent me off in his wife’s BIG TRUCK at that point to see if there were items to pick up at the Lower Frary Peak and Ranch aid stations.  That is one honking big truck to climb in and out of.  After that, Karen Skaggs mentioned that maybe I could start taking garbage to the dumpsters.  The previous year there had been three dumpsters in the next parking lot. I loaded up the inside of my jeep with smelly, oozy disgusting bags and set off.   Found there was only one dumpster and it was already full, but I was able to get a couple of trips worth on top.  Then we loaded boxes (a lot less disgusting) and I found another dumpster at the old race start and did several trips there until it was full.  At that point I said I wasn’t putting any more of the leaky bags in my jeep since it already was gross and smelled like rotten milk.

During some of these trips I was able to see Dave Crockett finish the first 100 miler on the island.  He had started at 6 p.m. the night before and ran the 50 mile course twice.  Very impressive!

As things started closing down we started gathering up empty canisters and such. I was put on emptying water jug detail, another garbage run in the BIG TRUCK across the island to Bridger Bay, and taking down the tents.  By then we were all tired and cold and the poles were freezing!  There were only about 8 people left and we were rushing to beat darkness to get the tents disassembled and finish loading the trucks.

I was sent home with two big bags of Buffalo stew and my car smelled gross the entire way home.  It was the first time I left the island after dark.  I stopped at a McDonalds to grab dinner and went into the bathroom to scrub my hands after all those hours of carting trash and to clean up all the scrapes and cuts so that I wouldn’t get infected.  I got home around 10 p.m. and still had to scrub out the car, hose down my shoe and cast/boot and then hose down myself.

Although I didn’t do an official workout, every inch of me hurts today and I will estimate I probably walked 3 or more miles on various tasks.

I'm going to blog my walking miles until I can get back to running.

Walked 2 miles easy after work today with the dog.  Foot felt pretty good in the brace, but I don't want to push it too much and re-injure the ankle.

Started week 4 (but it is really week 5) of the 100 pushup challenge.  Most of our co-workers have dropped out, but there are still a few of us die hards hanging in there.

Tonight I am going to do more upper body and some Wii Fit workout.

Power finally came back on at 5:30 this morning. It was a cold night.

Sold my Utah Valley Half Marathon slot today.  I was starting to worry about getting in shape for it in time and really didn't think I would be to that point.

Tonight was a bit more positive.  I tightened down the brace and headed out for a walk in the snow with the dog.  2 1/4 miles and I was probably doing 17-18 minute miles.  Some good stretching afterwards.  I was even starting to think of a recovery plan while walking. :)

Life has left me unable to workout yesterday because I was moving furniture and tonight because I got an injection in my ankle and needed to stay off of it.

The ankle is healing, slowly and surely.  The podiatrist calls it a mild case of tendonitis.  I received another herbal injection tonight that is supposed to help the body heal itself.

The doc recommends I stay away from no-heel shoes for a while since that seems to cause the tendon to elongate and hurt more.  So - I will avoid my vibram five-fingers and other flat shoes in the meantime.

HI Maurine! Just got caught up with your week's blogs. Sounds like you're staying busy, active and healing well. Sure miss you! Hope the ankle continue to heal well! Have a great week!

Thanks, Smooth. It is slowly coming along. I'm going to try to up my mileage to 4 miles 3x per week plus a long run. Wish the ankle would heal a lot faster. I'll have to catch up on everyone's blogs soon.

4 miles after work - about 2 of them with the dog, the rest alone.  Worked on keeping my heart rate in the 65-75% range. Shot hoops for 25 minutes, the last 15 with my son.  I almost beat him in HORSE today, but he sunk a lucky shot from about 8 feet behind the 3 point line and I don't have the arm strength to do that.

After dinner - 20 second fitness video. 45 minutes upper body workout. 10 minutes stretching.

1 mile warmup with the dog this morning.  20 second workout segment.  More after work.

2 mile speed walking at lunch.

4 miles running in the evening.  The last mile my ankle started bothering me on uphills, so I walked the two uphills.  Did my Card Deck workout while watching Biggest Loser.

Been working out hard and eating well and dropped 6 pounds this week (sure a lot of it was water weight).

Yay - saw my name on the St. George Marathon list for a minute before it crashed the site!  So - I went and signed up for the Pony Express Trail 100 - 50 Mile race.

PM - 60 minutes hard on the stationary bike keeping my heart rate at a high aerobic rate.  50 minutes leg weight training.  Another session of 20 second fitness. Stretching.  I'm tired now!

From Maurine/Miles on Wed, May 12, 2010 at 14:21:25 from 63.255.172.2

Of the people left, I was glad to see Sunshine go. I got very tired of the constant tears from her. I would like to see Daris win - but he is probably too skinny already. If not - I've changed my mind about Michael and think it would be good if he won. Might keep him motivated to lose the rest of the weight.

How about you?

From RAD on Wed, May 12, 2010 at 14:38:04 from 67.172.229.125

I agree about Sunshine, I figured she was too thin to lose enough weight when I saw Michael and Koli's #'s. I'm split on who I want to win... I think it's funny that Michael keeps complaining "who leaves a weight loss show and is still obese?" HELLO?!? What about Ashley right next to him and Shay last season? PLUS all the people who got voted off. The brown twins are probably STILL 400 pounds! He is just too hard on himself. I think Koli's gotten too cocky and Daris is too thin already. I don't think Ashley will drop enough weight to beat the men, and Michael could pull out a win if he gets his mental game on. I can see good and bad's each way. I guess I just love seeing the change in all of them. Bad thing is I swear there is some subliminal message in the show that makes me want to eat junk while I watch it though!!

Went to the chiropractor last night and he said my right knee, hip, ankle and back were all out of line from my injuries and such.  I will go back again Thursday for another alignment.

Ran 5 miles this morning in the sprinkles.  Felt nice and cool - but not cold.  I kept by HR in the 70-80% range.  Interesting that after running a little faster yesterday, my heart rate seemed to stay in lower ranges today and what felt like faster speed than normal - but I only had my heart rate monitor on - so maybe I was imagining things.  Ran out of energy the last couple of miles - could be from trying to lose weight.

Last ankle injection tonight at the podiatrist.  Ankle is doing a lot better this last week.

My sister and I volunteered at the State Capital Half Marathon this morning.  Talked to Rachel for a few minutes before heading off to our aid station. I cannot believe she is still running half marathons this close to being full-term.  She has potential to become an ultrarunner yet. :)

We were stationed behind the zoo on a long uphill.  I know how it helps me on hills when people have some music going, so cranked up my marathon song playlist on the ipod on my Jeep.  The Jeep also did double duty as an aid station table because the table was on the wrong side of the road and it has nice flat bumpers.

After all the runners passed, we headed over to the capital.  (We also stopped and put our flags on our brother's grave to cover the grave decorating detail while we were there). Got there just in time to see Rachel finish (and still faster than I can run when not pregnant).  Drove her and my sister back to the Olympus Hills shopping center to get their cars.

I came home and went out for a tempo run on 7th East.  "My speed" (such as it is) is starting to come back along with endurance and I felt happier about the six miles than I did on my five mile tempo run last week.

I also want to thank you for being SO amazing today. I was kind of pouty about this race, because I WANTED to do it, but didn't know anyone else running it and wanted company at the race. I don't think I've ever run a race 'alone' before! It SO totally made my day to see you at the beginning and then at your aid station! I LOVED the music. When I passed I thought "yup! Maurine knows how to do this right!" Then it was an added bonus to see you at the finish as well!! Seriously I am SO grateful for you today, plus a ride NOT in a bus back to the start. I'm not sure 'easy' is a good term for my mileage tonight.  I ran over to Hillcrest High School to try a bleacher workout I saw their soccer team do the other week.  You start at one end of the bleachers, run down the stairs, across the football field, up the other bleachers, over a set and then back down and across.  After finishing the entire set of bleachers, you then run around the tennis courts, ball diamonds and high school.  One lap is 1.3 miles.  I was able to run 2 circuits.  Add on the running there and back and it was a total of 5.75 miles.

I bet that was a cool route. I can picture it well. That is a tough hill going up to 13th. And then concrete from there because I'm sure you didn't want to run on the road next to that traffic, eh. Nice job.

I didn't start running until after 8 this morning and realized I should have started at least an hour earlier.  Ran the Trax trail over to 12300 South in Draper and back.  Added on another stretch over to 80th East and up that for a total of 14.5 miles.  I'm tired and covered in salt.  My dog thinks I smell wonderful.

No mojo today. I have an allergy on my arms from running in the sun on Saturday.  It makes it hard to sleep and I am itching like crazy.

In a phone meeting now, then flying off to Michigan for the week.

For the most part they are good. They can be bumpy and have lots of tree branches on them, but remind me of the paved trails at the end of the Ogden Marathon. They actually created them to help improve bike commuting. I do run with my phone in case of crazies and am prepared if I need to to run to the freeway because there is no fence between the path and the freeway, just lots of green spaces. No sidewalks and no shoulders on the road, so I like being able to run without worrying about cars hitting me.

6 miles in the early morning heading North on the freeway trail.  It started out sprinkling, but by a mile or so in it was pouring rain.  Had to watch out for the wet clay patches on the pavement so as not to slide.  Several areas of the trail were totally flooded on the way back.  Made for a wet but relaxing run.

7.5 miles tonight with a 2 mile repeat, slight break, then 3 1-mile repeats.  Pretty tired the last mile.  My goal was to try and stay under 10mm.

Faster miles:  9:55 + 9:49/ 10:04 (mainly uphill), 10:11 (losing gas), 10:49 - mentally gave out.

It is a monitor you strap on to your left arm that measures your calories burned and steps done during the day. You pair it with an online system for entering your food and can more accurately measure the calorie differential. Go to www.bodybugg.com and you can read more on it.

I ran the 2nd annual Red Hot Pink Chicks Half Marathon today. This is just a bunch of friends and runners getting together to have fun up Provo Canyon and back.  I didn't race at all, but my goal was to run the entire race without any walking at all.  I was able to achieve that goal and the legs felt strong as I finished, so my training and endurance are coming along well.

I loved running the first three miles with Marion.  I don't think I have run at all with anyone else this year except for a mile or two with Steve Ashbaker.

After a quick break to eat, check on the dog and swimming pool, I headed over to do the Little Cottonwood Canyon trail.  It had closed signs pasted all over it, so naturally, I ignored them.  Had to climb over some barriers built to keep less adventurous people off and around the one mile mark found huge portions of the trail totally gone.  I've seen flooding damage on trail before where chunks are gone, but this was the entire trail, with 5-10 feet deep chasms.  Had to do a bit of a balancing act over pipes and downed trees to get to the first bridge to get over the water.

Was not tired after working at the temple tonight, so headed out around 10 p.m. and did another 6.25 miles.  I can't believe it was almost 90 at that time of night.

Nice work on all those miles today, you are really getting back to it in incredible fashion!

Rest day today.  Not sure how much of a workout I will do.

I'm in the middle of a mental debate on doing relatively long back to back runs on Friday and Saturday, or doing my 35 mile adventure down to Provo to get a huge training run in on Saturday. Any thoughts or input?

Are you looking to do an ultra?

From Smooth on Sun, Jul 25, 2010 at 16:00:39 from 174.23.218.43

WOW! You ran this same stint but in much hotter time of the year as in 2009. You are amazing! So brave, so tough! That's the quality of an ultra marathoner!

We barely missed you on the trail. We were done as the moon set around 5. Dang, had I known you were planning an ultra, we would have loved to have your company.

I still can't believe you run that many miles solo! Did your dad greet you with bounty of post-run foods and a nice ride home to your bed?

From Maurine/Miles on Sun, Jul 25, 2010 at 18:19:44 from 97.117.65.30

Steve - this run was to see where my fitness was in my plans to run SGM and the Pony Express 50 miler in October. That will be my 'real' ultra.

Smooth - my dad wasn't there when I got to his house. He came home a few minutes later. He remembered I had requested a bag of ice for after my run. So, took an ice bath and shower and then he drove me home. We stopped for lunch in Draper. Had to be somewhere unobtrusive since all I had on was an old t-shirt and workout pants I borrowed from my dad and smelly running shoes.

Interesting thing on the shoes - this pair was getting pretty worn, but I found that all those miles on hot pavement yesterday had some of the remaining heel sections peeling off. They hit the garbage can today. :(

Yesterday was a killer day at work and no breaks except for an exciting Condo Board Meeting (no sarcasm at all there) from 7 a.m until midnight when I finally crashed.

Tons of meetings today and I know I still need to do a couple of hours worth of work tonight, but after the meetings ended I came home, played with the dog, bugged my son, then headed out to run up to the gym on 13th East. Threw in a few hill repeats down to Creek Road and back and then took an hour to do a full body work out at the gym.  Then I ran up 13th East to 9400 South and down towards the quarry.  I finally explored a paved trail that runs between the ampitheater and the golf course on the east and Wally World and the new condos on the west.  It is about a mile long and has some gentle hills on it.  There is a killer switchback down to the condos that I might use for some really tough hill repeats one day.  Ended up taking the dog out for a one mile cooldown for a total of 9.5 miles running.

Felt some pain in my eye during the night, but it didn't really mean anything until I woke up and realized my cornea had torn again. Rummaged around in a panic until I found the emergency contact I had for this.

Since running seems to be one of the things that actually eases the pain, took the dog out for a 2 mile warmup run, then dropped her off and did another four on my own.  Steve A flew by me as I was heading in to get ready for work.

Glad I was not leaving for Michigan until tomorrow.  Need to get into an eye doctor today.

From Maurine/Miles on Fri, Aug 20, 2010 at 15:49:33 from 63.255.172.2

Thanks, Teena. Just some general type pain occurring behind the knee when I run longer distances. Basically the same thing you taped me for last year for the Logan Peak Trail Run. More precautionary than anything.

Will wet wipes work for cleaning off the leg (without lotions or aloe)? I will make sure to not put on sunblock until after you are done.

I will be up there picking up my bib around 5:30. Is that good?

From Teena Marie on Fri, Aug 20, 2010 at 16:00:25 from 75.169.254.20

Maurine ~

Yes and yes!!! We just want to make sure that the tape stays on. I have this really great Muller spray that keeps the stuff on forever. Unfortunately, I am already in PC and don't have it with me. The wet wipes should work. Or even a washcloth that we could get wet.

I will look for you at the Field House! :)

Race: Park City Marathon (26.2 Miles) 05:50:00
Easy MilesMarathon Pace MilesThreshold MilesVO2 Max MilesTotal Distance
26.200.000.000.0026.20

I did the Park City Marathon today as a long training run. Overall, I was relatively pleased with my endurance, not very happy about my speed.  Time to start pushing speed in my workouts.

I saw Luz in the fieldhouse this morning and then met Smooth and Teena.  Teena was nice enough to KT Tape my left knee for precautionary measures.  It has been a little twingy on runs, but nothing I was worried about.  I had a wrap for my ankle in case I need it because it has been a bit sore at times lately, but I keep finding that it never hurts when I run, so ended up not needing to wrap it.

The contact was removed from my eye yesterday and I debated putting another emergency contact in this morning. I am starting to dreading sleep because that is usually when I feel the skin on the cornea tear. The eye has bothered me all day - probably should have put the lens in - but I used medicated eye drops instead.

Anyway - back to the race.  Park City is so low key compared to other races.  They had the anthem right before 6:30 and then we headed out.  I kind of wish they would start the race at 6 to try and beat the heat up there more.  I knew I wouldn't have any speed because I haven't done any speed work or altitude work this year. I had said hello to Mike DeWaal and his wife before the race - he is my mailman from work.  This was his first marathon post heart attack and they were aiming for 5 hours as a long run too.

Shortly after starting out I saw one marathon runner just quit the course and then about 1-2 miles out saw a couple of half marathoners realize they were on the wrong course.  Talked with Ken, one of the bike paramedics and we would joke with each other throughout the race.  I actually geared myself to be in last at the beginning and was comfortable not pushing myself.  I knew I would start passing people after a while.

Around mile 4 I passed my first runner.  She was talking about the hills and I mentioned there were about 17 miles of uphills on the course. She then said, "Good thing I am only doing the half." I mentioned she was on the wrong course and she said that she had a brother and other friends also running the half that were up ahead.  After the race I mentioned this to the RD, Jolie, and suggested she post a sign around the corner by the fieldhouse to let half marathoners know they were on the wrong course. Never saw that runner again.  Hope she got a ride back.

At mile 6 I passed two runners.  Easily pulled ahead of them and then didn't pass anyone again until mile 12.  I was just enjoying listening to an audio book and really didn't pay attention to the mile markers, but noticed they were usually 1/10 of a mile early compared to my GPS.

Starting at mile 14, I was able to pass 2-4 or more runners each mile and only one ever passed me back for good and that was at a pit stop.  Took advantage of any water hoses that people were using to mist people and had my lower body cooled down.

The course was a little different coming back through Park City.  I think they had events with the Tour de Utah and had to keep us out of the downtown area. After Empire Avenue, I found they did a better job of marking the course in the neighborhoods and didn't get off course like a bunch of us did last year.

One bossy little girl was really cute and giving out ice water at her house.  I gratefully took it and then put all the ice in my cap.  It felt good to have that melt over the next few miles.

One disadvantage of running near the back - all the food was gone when I ran by the big barn. :( PC uses Hammer Gels, so had to carry all my own gels since those made me sick.

Overall - it was a good race.  I like the new disposable chip system and thought the race was well run.  I did like the food at the end - they gave you a disposable bowl with 3 banana chunks, two types of bread and some pretzels.  Now if only the chocolate milk was not all gone.

I had plans to run more later today, but the altitude and hills took a toll on me.  Just did an ice bath and lounged around wearing compression shorts and socks.

Maurine ~ It was so good to see you pre-race! You look beautiful in pink! I kept looking for your *twin* sister on the bike path just after the last tunnel! When I ran by the golf course neighborhood I thought about you and how we got to run that part together last year and you took our pictures!

I agree with earlier start time. DNews starts at 5:30 and it's just as dark and more scary running down big mountain. If they have bike pacers I don't see why they can't start early especially when we don't need to ride the bus and it's such a small low key race anyway.

There was NO food other than banana at the barn this year. I used their hammer gel but wish they would put them at the first table instead of at the last. The aid stations were not manned and stocked as well as in years past. The aid station at mile 20 ran out of water! But I do like all the tank sprayers they had this year! It was much needed with that heat!

WAY to finish a long long hot hot high altitude run!

Hope your eye is feeling better!

From Maurine/Miles on Tue, Aug 24, 2010 at 17:35:22 from 63.255.172.2

I was very disappointed at the barn this year too. Absolutely no food at all (not even bananas) when I got there. Usually I enjoy that stop. Kind of good to know they blew it all around.

Plus - on the sections where they handed out towels, by the time I came through they were all done.

I realize that people can't plan things for slower runners, but I feel like I should be granted the same benefits as faster runners even though it takes me longer to get there.

I had great plans for speedwork this week at lower elevation, but when we got off the plane in Michigan this afternoon we were slammed with 92 degree heat and high humidity.

Tonight I ran 8.5 miles on the trails in my new crocs.  Other than needing to get used to little pebbles creeping in, they were nice and comfortable.

Finished up with 45 minutes on the stationary bike in the hotel fitness center.

Did a quick run this morning since we fly home this afternoon.  Probably shouldn't have stayed up half the night reading The Maze Runner.

I maintained a good pace and felt strong until the turnaround point.  At that point I felt like I slammed into a wall. It was a death run back to the hotel.  Interestingly enough - I was almost on the same pace as on the first half of the run, even with the last half being net uphill.  I think the long run from last night and the humidity were getting to me (and lack of sleep).  My clothes were drenched before I had even run 2 miles.

I was very pleased to have the scale under 150 this morning.  I vow to never go over again.

Arrived early at Marion's house and visited for a while.

Around 6:20 I ran down to the community center to pick up my race bib, then ran back to Marion's and dropped off my packet, and ran back.

Visited or said hi to Rachel, Kelli and Michelle before the race.

My goal for the race was to beat my previous PR and maintain sub 11:00 mm.  The PR was easy enough to do since my last PR was back when I started running in 2006 at 1:17:+.

Race started pretty well on time and we were cheered on by the 5K runners who would start after us.  Started a little close to the front, but it was a small race, so didn't clog up the course.  Lots of people passed me in the first mile.  Watched the train crossing up ahead and hoped it didn't stop Michelle in her quest to win.  Mile 1 -10:20

Watched the hot air balloons filling up and started wishing I had kept my gloves instead of dropping them at the start. Cold out! Mile 2 - 10:18

Started passing a few runners each mile.  Skipped the aid station and passed several people that stopped to drink. Mile 3 - 10:33

Finally felt a bit warmer.  Passed yellow shirt guy that I had been following the whole race (of course, he was a bit older than me). The hill on this mile didn't make me happy and my time fell below 11 mm a few times. Mile 4 - 10:28

Energy lacking on this mile.  Still seemed to be uphill and I was finally feeling tired. Mile 5 - 11:02

Just holding on for the last mile.  I could have made myself miserable, but just wanted to meet my goals.  Said hi to Michelle and Lily as they ran their cooldown.  Kelli met me around 5:75 and ran me in the rest of the way.10:49

No kick left, but did a bit of a sprint at the finish.

.6 mile cooldown. Next year, new age group and I will go sub 60 on this race.

Won a $10 gift certificate to a nursery and gave it to Marion as a thank you.

Wonderful pancake and fruit breakfast at Marion's house afterwards.

Hey, I'm not sure what you have going on Monday, 9/27, but I am planning to do a last long run before tapering for Pony Express. I am going to head out to Cedar Valley near Eagle Mountain and run the flat dirt roads out there. It is a great simulation for the race. And because the course is made up of 5 smallish loops around the car you can pretty much just go as far as you want. If you want to join me I can give you the details. I'll start early and end early. Something to think about.

From Maurine/Miles on Fri, Sep 17, 2010 at 09:58:24 from 63.255.172.2

It sounds like a great plan. Unfortunately, I am in taper mode for St. George and will be using that for my last long run.

Thank you for asking though!

Are you going to camp out before the Pony Express? How long does it take to drive to the start?

From jun on Fri, Sep 17, 2010 at 10:00:41 from 66.239.250.209

Maurine, My name is Jim Kern. I would like to run the Pony Express 50 Miler but have not been able to find a crew. My childhood friend, the famous Davy Crockett, suggested that I humbly ask you if you would be willing to share. Our race times are fairly similar (though you appear to be a bit faster). A sampling of mine are:

2009 Buffalo Run 50k 8:46:21

2010 Buffalo Run 25K 4:21:03

2010 Peach Days 10k 1:04:38

I started running two years ago and have completed three ultras and two marathons plus a lot of other races.

Is crew sharing a possibility?

From Maurine/Miles on Thu, Sep 23, 2010 at 13:32:51 from 63.255.172.2

Jim - I think I ran part of a Buffalo Run training run with you and another runner that was just getting over knee replacement surgery in 2009? I remember you because you were just learning how to deal with the diabetes.

I have sent an email to my sister to see if she would be willing to double crew. I will let you know as soon as I hear back from her.

I'll post more later.

2008 was the coldest marathon in St. George history. 2010 was the hottest.

Ran with Leslie until mile 11 then lost her.  Passed my marathon guru Vic Mason (running his first marathon in 5 years after two Achilles surgeries sidelined him) at 13.  He was struggling with food poisoning.

Disappointed that St. George did not have gu's this year except at mile 5 - glad I brought my own.

Pushed myself moderately in the heat, but knew that I couldn't PR in the heat, so settled for breaking 5:30 and keeping healthy for PE50 in 13 days.

Thanks to the marvelous Teena/Tina for taping my knee and IT band on Wednesday night. No pain at all!

My sister was an awesome crew.  Came to Veyo to cheer us all on and got a lot of comments on her sign about 'Go Mo' - she says a lot of people thought she meant more instead of Mo. :) Also said one guy asked where Larry was.  She thought about replying he was either at the Gay Games or long gone (my ex is Larry) - but figured it would only confuse them. Then, she was waiting on the Diagonal at 24 with a frosty Gatorade and a cup full of ice for my cap.  (That saved me in the heat for the last miles). I passed the ice around to other runners who were also very grateful and she told me later she had two bags full of ice she had been passing out to any runner who wanted it.

Saw Vic's wife, Judy, at 25.5.  She took my picture and then asked if I knew where Vic was. I told her the food poisoning was bothering him a lot and I thought he was 30-60 minutes back. She started to cry at that because she had the same food poisoning and knew how hard it was on him and that he had ran anyway. Stopped for a while to comfort her and told her I would come back. Lost a couple of minutes there - but they weren't wasted.

After I finished I grabbed some treats and Marcia and I started walking back to see Judy.  Just past the finish chutes, we saw Vic coming in.  He had managed to rally himself.  Then I saw Leslie about 50 feet behind him. They even ran together for a while.  Walked Judy back in.

Vic & Judy let us shower at their hotel before the long drive home.

Great day - now on to taper and recovery for Pony Express 50.

That was a doozy in the heat! Great job Maurine, I just could not keep up, the heat and the under training and my fat butt. I have a lot of work to do to get ready for my next race!

You will rock at the PE50!!!

That heat must have been a killer! Saint George is pretty extreme (both ways!). I can't believe this was your warm up for Pony Express. Sounds like SGM was a pretty good experience for you. Have a PE "taper" this week. You are tough as nails sister, you just keep on, keepin' on. I love that about you.

I'm still deciding whether to do Ogden or UVM (the full). I'm leaning toward UVM right now, I'll hit the SLC 1/2 for my spring 1/2. Hate Devine Racing, but I love the SLC course. I'm glad you got in though, I noticed on FB the posts that it was filling quickly!

I'm impressed you were back at it today. I know you've got PE coming, but man. I am SO sore the 2 today was enough. Nice work Maurine!!

From Maurine/Miles on Wed, Oct 06, 2010 at 15:44:50 from 63.255.172.2

Yep, Allie - it is all sold out.

Rachel - I refuse to do any Devine Racing races - because I feel they are crooks. They were very easy miles and my legs are actually sorer today after a measly 2.5 than after the entire marathon.

Less than 9 days.

They say the full will be sold out by the weekend. I wonder if that means they are not planning on being part of the Grand Slam in 2011?

From Smooth on Thu, Oct 07, 2010 at 17:25:49 from 67.41.235.104

I just signed up Ogden Full. Last year I mailed in the registration in Dec to get the Slam discount. They cashed my check and didn't bother to hand register me. What a hassle. I think Ogden is getting too bad for its own good. On the other hand, I was very impressed with UVM. Hyrum cares about the runners.

I am so excited for your PE in 8 days. Wish I was running it since it's my 55th birthday! HAVE FUN! Can't wait to read your report! I will be thinking of you!

I'll post more details in my personal running blog later.  For now, let me say that this is BY FAR the toughest thing I have ever done.  I have learned a lot through this experience.

Thursday afternoon my sister came by and we loaded up her van with all my accumulated race supplies and headed out to the Pony Express Trail.  We camped for the night near the pet cemetery and visited with Davy Crockett and some of the other runners and crew.  This is probably my first race where the Race Director hand delivered the goody bag.

Spent some time going over race plans and directions with Marcia and then we set up the van so we could sleep in the back for the night.  The sky that far from civilization was gorgeous.  We laid one of the sleeping bags in a clearing and stared up at the sky.  I had no idea there were that many stars out there.  We even saw some shooting stars.

My body finally gave in and let me sleep from a little after midnight until 4:30 a.m.  Good thing I slept 9 hours the night before.  We saw the vehicle from the other runner in our crew waiting by us, so I got dressed in the dark since I wasn't into exhibitionism that early in the morning.

A little before 5 we walked over to the trail and cheered on the early start 100 mile racers.  Some of them were already walking - only in a ultramarathon will you see that.  Introduced ourselves to Jim Kern and then went back and finished getting ready. As I put on my designated racing shoes, I realized the laces were too tight and had to adjust them.  This should have given me a clue.  I noticed a week or so before that the insoles had worn out, so had placed my heat fitted insoles in the shoes.  I've run with these insoles before with no problem.

We drove the half mile up to the starting line and Davy gave a little speech and someone joked about singing the national anthem and at 6 a.m. the 50 mile early start was off.  The first half mile is a steep downhill, so held myself back.  Jim and I ended up visiting and running together for the first 16.6 miles, so it was nice to have a companion. We ran with headlamps and flashlights for the first 6 or so miles until it was light enough we could run in the dark.  I think we were all enjoying the cool of the morning because we knew it would heat up soon.  One of the support crews flew a UFO to entertain us (a remote plan with LED lights) and that was fun.

Marcia was going about 4 miles ahead at this point and mainly pulled over so we could strip off layers of clothes and get sunscreen sprayed on us.

About mile 10 we hear this yell behind us and it was Davy Crockett bounding along looking strong.  He started an hour after us and had already caught up.  At mile 14, Craig/Jun also passed us and gave me a hug.  He looked fit and strong.

After a long uphill we pulled into Simpson Springs and reported in our numbers.  I grabbed new water bottles and Jim stopped to fill his bottles and that is the last I saw of him.  About mile 21, Marcia passed me and Jim was now a passenger.  He had to DNF at mile 19 when he stepped on a rock and felt a pop in his foot.  I felt bad for him because I know how devastating my DNF was and because he was using my crew for his crew, he was stuck with us all day.  But it was nice having an additional crew member.  I got really spoiled.

I was maintaining a 8 minute running/2 minute walking routine for most of the initial portion of the race - except for walking the uphill into Simpson Springs.  At this point I was on the long straitaway where you could see the road ahead of you for miles.  It was already seriously hot and I was doing the best I could to take in fluids and foods and keep cool.  My daughter, son-in-law and grandkids had sent me a care package with race food and posters (which I was ordered to not look at).  Every once in a while Marcia would put up new posters and it would make me smile to see her drive past and enjoy them.

I think I passed the halfway point at 5:49 and marathon distance around 6:15.  It was about the 25 mile mark when I started to seriously suffer.  I could feel my legs still somewhat heavy from St. George 13 days earlier and the heat was zapping my insides.  Took some Immodium to settle down the intestines, but the stomach was now bothering me.  Nothing serious, but I couldn't tolerate the thought of eating many foods.  Some things would appeal to me for a short period of time, but often I would start to eat something and then spit it out because it started to gag me.

I called a 10 minute sit down break at the 50K point.  I set a new trail PR for that distance during the race, but my notes are still in my sister's van.  Marcia and Jim were helping me to clean up and wash my feet, change shoes, etc.  I could feel some serious hot spots on my big toes and wondered if they were from the harder edges of my insoles. It turns out they were.  A couple of decent blisters on each one, plus another blister on the bottom of my right heel that had Marcia concerned.  We taped my feet up and then Marcia massaged my left foot.  I had felt 'cramping' for 10+ miles in that foot and it turns out it was my neuroma flaring up - again I think that had to do with the insole because it had not happened before.  The new shoes and socks felt wonderful and I was glad I traded them in.

Rest breaks were now down to every 3 miles or so.  I wanted to make sure I got my walking poles for the hills up Dugway Pass. I thought those would help me power walk up the hill better. As I headed up Dugway, I had my head down and was just focusing on step at a time when I suddenly heard a rattle. I looked up and there was a rattlesnake about 2 feet in front of me.  He was smaller then me, but I decided to cross the road and give him the right of way. On the way up the pass I thought it was interesting that I struggled more on the less steep portions and felt pretty good on the steep sections.

One more sit down break at the top of the pass and then I headed down the downhill.  I was able to run nonstop for a while and the different muscles used on the uphill and downhill enjoyed getting used. By this point in the race I had given up on solid foods.  I pretty well couldn't even handle Ensure any more and had switched from  Gatorade Endurance to G2.  I was able to occasionally force down a Gu, but even struggled with that.  Water was about it. The downhill hurt my stomach muscles incredibly. Up until then, I didn't know how tired my abs and lungs were.  Had to battle a bit of nausea, but since I didn't have much in my system, what little I had drank stayed down.

At mile 41 I received another boost as my Jeep pulled up alongside me with my son, Kevin, in it.  He had come out to cheer me on in my great adventure.  We talked for a minute or so, then I sent him on ahead and asked him to walk back and push me along at the next break. I was still running more than walking, but not for more than 2-3 minutes at a time.

With three people in my crew, I was really rocking the spoiling.  I decided to try the walking poles again from 43-45 and actually got a second wind that allowed me to run almost that entire section.  45-47 was another struggle, so I tried the poles again and they seemed to help me run more.  I would use them to help me count 200 pole plants running, then 100 pole plants walking.

It was a beautiful site to see Blackrock.  Unfortunately, you have to go past Blackrock for .6 mile and then come back.  I was soooooo tired at this point in time, and ready to be done. I touched the turnaround sign and headed back.  It was a long way back. I bawled most of the way and had a big stupid grin on my face. I had requested my crew to come out and join me and we ran the final steps in together. Marcia put my finishers medal on me at my request and then we all hugged each other.  What a day.  Final time was 13:07. I was next to last, but couldn't care less.  I have now accomplished another one of my dreams.

Post race follow-up:

I am still pretty impressed with myself for finishing this race.  I learned an awful lot about myself and endurance during this event.

I agree with Craig - I am not a big gatorade fan anymore.  S-Caps saved me when I couldn't stomach anything other than water.

The body can survive an awful long time running on just water.

I have one remaining blister under the toenail of my second toe on the left foot.  I keep draining it, but it is painful to wear anything other than crocs that put pressure on it.

I had some stiffness on Saturday, but none really since then. The left knee twinges a little when I keep it bent for a long time, but resting it makes it feel much better.

I walked the dog for a half mile on Sunday and felt really tired. Yesterday we went 3/4 of a mile and I felt better. Hopefully, we can do 1-2 miles tonight.

Spoiled myself last night and got my hair cut and colored.  I feel like a new person.

I'm starting to focus on correcting my negative thinking that I have no speed and eliminating junk miles.

Once I warmed up I kept my pace between 10-11 minutes per mile. Once I can comfortably keep all my miles under 11, I will start doing some speedwork anf gradually increase my pace.

I would like to be doing 10 mm on my daily runs before the Ogden Half next Spring.

Maurine - sounds like a good training plan. My foot has healed well. It felt like a bruise/knot behind the ball of my foot. I ran the 5k two weeks ago and struggled, then I got sick and couldn't hardly get out of bed. Yesterday was my first day back running and it felt great. Today I hit the trails up Perry canyon, that felt even better.

Easy MilesMarathon Pace MilesThreshold MilesVO2 Max MilesTotal Distance

Really pathetic this morning. I was very ambitious when I set out about keeping my pace below 11 mm, but soon shut off my Garmin in frustration. Absolutely no energy at all. Needed a pb, so stopped at the gym and did 1.5 miles on the treadmill. I was pouring sweat at 4-4.5 mph and couldn't figure it out. It felt like when my anemia is out of control.

Running home I was pondering if I was sick or anemic or what. Mentally I was thinking, "My iron levels were plenty high on Saturday afternoon when I donated blood..." Then it clicked, I donated blood on Saturday afternoon, so probably am anemic right now.

I'll give myself a few more days to recover before worrying about pace again.

PM - ran 1.5 miles on the treadmill as a warmup. My trainer kicked my legs with lots of balance training and a solid lower body workout.
