Very solid day:) Glad to hear that your feeling good too. It's tough to eat healthy, I have a tough time preparing meals in advance. Just not used to that I guess. The Dollar store for me comes in handy when your on a budget but it's not the healthiest..

Are you doing the Buffalo run this year?

From Maurine/Miles on Thu, Jan 12, 2012 at 16:41:06 from 97.117.73.144

Thanks. Yes - I am doing the 50K version this year. How about you?

From Smooth on Thu, Jan 12, 2012 at 16:53:56 from 75.162.95.99

WaHoo!!! 50K. You're AWESOME!!!

I am still trying to decide. If I do, it will be the 25K. I'm worry about the elevation and terrain. It looks TOUGH!!!

From Maurine/Miles on Thu, Jan 12, 2012 at 16:57:58 from 97.117.73.144

It is very tough. And the hard part about the 50K is that you finish it once and have to start all over again. The 50 Miler is actually considered easier by many runners - because once you finish the 25k course, you have the hills pretty well done.

I'm using it as a training run for the Zion 50 Miler in May - although it would be nice if I could get in shape and PR the course.

Ran down and along the trax trail and then up Dimple Dell Parkway to 13th East. Turned around and that one mile from 13th East to 7th East was magic where everything flowed and running was beautiful.  Think that means my endurance and fitness are improving.  I've missed not really loving running for a year and am glad to have that back. 7th East to back home with a few hills by the Quarry thrown in.

Later - 1.5 miles fast walking with the dog to work some kinks out.

Hilly route this afternoon in the rain.  I've decided Monday will be my hill day.  Ran up 7th East to 8600 South then up the hill to 13th East and up more hills to 9400 South. Down into the quarry and more hills on the paved trail behind Walmart. Then home.  Only walked 50 steps on the worst uphill - next time I won't walk any.

Curious why I didn't feel a tailwind on the uphills, but no matter which way I was headed when I ran the downhills I had a headwind.

Race: Buffalo Run 50K (32 Miles) 09:39:11
Easy MilesMarathon Pace MilesThreshold MilesVO2 Max MilesTotal Distance
32.000.000.000.0032.00

I ran this race a day early on my own in order to help run an aid station on Saturday during the actual race.  Started a while after the 100 mile runners and also after the one other 50K runner doing it a day early.

I forgot half my gear in the car - but lived without it.

Going in I knew this was going to be a sufferfest because I lost so much training in February during my four weeks of being sick. I called it my couch to 50K in three weeks program.

I kept telling myself it will be good training for the 48 hours Across the Years race in December.  My predictions were 9 hours if it was a good day and 10 hours if it was a bad.  I fell within my predictions at 9 hours 39 minutes so feel like it was a decent day.  I finished, I learned things, and I had a new great niece born during the race - so call it good.

Wind was brutal off and on all day.  That may have slowed me down some. I never felt like it gave me an advantage.  However, I really preferred the wind to the heat that the runners experienced on Saturday.

Ran the entire race in short sleeve shirt, shorts, compression socks, Altra Lone Peaks (bought them two weeks ago) and a cap that I alternated the brim according to the wind.  Picked up a jacket for the second round because I knew night would fall, but never needed it.

Round 1:  My goal was to walk the uphills, run the downhills and alternate run 100/walk 50 on the flats and gentle uphills.  I accomplished that with no problems.  Saw Karl Meltzer bombing down past Lone Tree on  his way to setting up a good lead in the 100 Mile race.  There was a buffalo approaching me at mile 3 as I crested the hill, but he let me pass without any problems. Each time I went over the ridge I turned on my cell phone to text out updates to my sister, daughter and son.  Coming back over the ridge on the end of the loop I found out my niece was in labor - so something exciting to track.

Round 2: As I loaded up my pack for the second round (I had dropped a bag at the fence since there wouldn't be an aid station there), I really wanted to quit and had to talk myself out of it.  I was bonking majorly and kept telling myself that I could walk the entire thing and still finish before midnight. Put a jacket around my waist, grabbed my new headlamp and my handheld flashlight (green - following in Davy Crockett's footsteps) and headed out.

Ran into another buffalo about 2 miles up near a fence line. He was laying next to the trail and I went up and around him.  Shook my head at the stupid teenagers behind me yelling at him to try and get him to move.  I'd rather move around a buffalo than irritate it. Called my sister while going over the ridge and it looked like a C-section might be coming up because the baby's heart rate was dropping.

Miles 16-24 were brutal.  I had no energy and would have to force myself to run.  After mile 24 things got better and I could run for longer periods of time.  Karl passed me at mile 29 on the ridge, but I was going slow and hearing about my new great niece, Samantha.  Healthy little baby - but with the expected issues of a cleft lip and cleft palate that will be dealt with as she grows.

Finished the race at 10:08 p.m. Recovered and slept in my jeep because it was too windy to set up my tent.  Zipper broke on the sleeping bag and I couldn't stretch out, so it was a miserable, sleepless night.

I'm still just SO proud of you! What an awesome race, plus having a baby born while running probably really helped to get your mind off the craziness. You seriously are one tough woman. I'm not sure I could handle two loops of that course. I was done by the 2nd pass of the aid station!! Nice work and then turning around and helping all of us the next day. It was great to see you, and you looked really good. I wouldn't have guessed you'd been finished with a 50K and had a bad night!

From Lulu Walls on Sun, Mar 25, 2012 at 13:36:16 from 166.70.240.95

Wow! That is awesome that you ran the course on your own and then volunteered. You are pretty much amazing!!!

Maurine ~ I read your report two weeks ago but in too much pain myself to comment!

First of all I want to thank you for taking care of us at the aid station on Sat. I seriously was/am in awe of your tenacity, toughness, and awesome volunteerism! :)

Secondly, HUGE CONGRATZ on running a 50K on your own unaided and successfully with your couch to 50K program! How many people can run a tough 50K no less in such a short period since being sick! That course kicked my trash and I only ran it one round! NO WAY would I want to go round 2 especially late in the day!

Lastly, CONGRATZ on the safe arrival of baby Samantha! Hope mother and baby are doing well. You mentioned she has cleft lip and palate, is she otherwise healthy?

Again, you are AWESOME!!! :)

From Maurine/Miles on Tue, Apr 03, 2012 at 20:18:56 from 97.117.76.6

Thank you, Smooth. That is so nice of you. I was glad to volunteer - but will admit that I was extremely miserable most of the day.

I have not run any other 50K's - but I think this one is a killer because of the double loop. I hate the start and the idea of doing it twice isn't too fun.

27.200.000.000.0027.20

I was worried about bonking bad on my run last weekend and tried to do a taper this week.  Hate the phantom pains that come along with that.

Picked up my packet last night and got to say hi to Sarah and Sasha Pachev.  Nice to see them again.

This morning I got on the bus up to the marathon start. I'd been hydrating for a few days and carbo loading and hoped that would keep me together.  Reports of wind had me concerned, but reports of cooler weather had me rejoicing.

In Wellsburg, chose to hold a barn up with a bunch of other runners.  I saw too many near the fires trying to get stickers out of their clothes and didn't want to deal with that.  I was also amazed at how many people ignored the requests to get their drop bags in the truck.

Hung around the start line and saw Kelli and Walter and wished them well.  I was concerned about not being cold at all after getting out of my warm clothes - expected a warm day as a result.

I knew I wasn't well trained for the race, but was hoping to do 2 minutes running and 1 minute walking for as long as I could maintain.  Enjoyed the downhills with a mild tailwind and quickly settled into my routine. I avoided  music until I got on the highway to keep that as a reward.

Once on the highway - the headwinds started.  I have never battled headwinds like this in a race before and they lasted from mile 7-20, when we got out of the canyon.

I wasn't prepared for the number of long uphills, since the race advertises their downhills so strongly and the course changed completely since I ran it last.  Except for parts of two of the longer uphills, I was able to maintain my rhythm.  Made a pit stop at 9 to lighten the load (so to speak) and that helped.

That canyon seemed to last forever - I think the heat and the headwinds did not help.  It was nice to break out of the canyon and see my sister. She had a cowbell and treats for me and met me every mile or two until near the end.  I wasn't handling food well because of the heat, but I'm enjoying the treats now and sucked on an Ensure and then a Powerade for part of the run.

At 5 hours the body wanted to quit, so I switched to run 1/walk 1 minute.  The legs were tired but not hurting.  Strapped up the IT band at mile 17 after a few downhills started a flareup.  Tried a new method for taping the balls of my feet to avoid the blistering issues I've been having lately and that did the trick, although the tape did take off a bit of the outer layer of skin.  Beats blisters.

Motivated a few people, met some new people and beat my expected time by almost 13 minutes.  Not a bad day.  Now to get in shape for St. George.

I feel so vindicated. I went into this race thinking it would be easy (relatively) because it was supposed to be so fast.

And why didn't someone unplug the wind machine?

I have been a bad blogger! I read your report the weekend and was so bummed that I had missed you and your sister!

Anyhow, here's my belated CONGRATZ to you for putting another marathon under your belt. Way to beat your goal by 13 min on a warm head windy day. So happy you are running so many races this year! Keep up the good work, my friend! :)

Was supposed to run the Pipeline Trail with Leslie, but my alarm didn't go off. I called to let her know and then fell back asleep. Since my goal today was at least 13, I decided that it would be good practice to work on my pacing (2 min running/1 min walking) for Bryce Canyon Half since I am in the 3:00 slot.  Ran on the Trax trail until it ended and back for a total of 13.1.  Watch said 3:00:10 - so I was pretty spot on.

Hiked up and ran down from Lamb's Canyon to Millcreek Canyon.  On the way back up, started to hike up Mt. Aire, but I was too tired and knew the climb up was going to be tough as it is.

Definitely need to do more uphill work.  It wiped me out.  But the downhill runs were worth the uphills.  My garmin stopped working on the way back up to Lamb's Canyon but then worked running down.  I must have been moving too slow and it figured I was dead.

1.5 miles with Twilight tonight.  Upper body workout.

3 miles running with the dog this morning.

Late afternoon I headed out on the Elliptigo to find the end of the Jordan River Parkway Trail.  It disappeared right around North Temple - so I'm thinking that might be the end - or else you have to zigzag to find it.  Found lots of neat sights on territory I haven't covered before. My shoulders were really stiff on the way home.  Either I was grabbing the bar more than I thought or too tense.  Ran out of 70 ounces of water at mile 30.  Stopped and filled the bladder with 40 more ounces of warm water.  It beat nothing.  That too was drained on the way home and I only pee'd once and not much - so probably dehydrated.  The last three miles are a gradual uphill and I was totally drained by the time I got home.  38.25 miles on the Elliptigo.  I'm giving myself 19 miles credit for the 4 hours of riding.

After - drank an entire quart of chocolate milk. That sure tasted good.

15.500.000.000.0015.50

Paced the 3:00 pace group for the Bryce Canyon Half Marathon.  This is a beautiful course with lots of downhill. The first mile it rained and was cold which had me a bit concerned.  Then the rain dropped back to a drizzle and race conditions were perfect until around mile 8 or 9.  The day wasn't too hot, it was overcast, I had two fun teenagers to run with and lots of great people around.  Last few miles it alternated between raining and pouring.  We were trying to motivate people so we did a lot of jumping around and running backwards getting cars that passed us to honk.  We motivated a few people - so it was all worth while.

My daughter is in town, so we enjoyed the chance to go down and see Bryce Canyon.  We loved taking pictures in Red Canyon.  After the race, we got cleaned up and headed out to see Bryce Canyon.  It was overcast, so we couldn't see much, but decided to go partway down into the Navajo Loop to see if it was pretty down there.  It was - we got some gorgeous pictures.  That area is really spectacular.  Unfortunately, at the halfway point it started to rain and then pour.  Jenn lives at below sea level - so combining altitude, being out of shape, and slippery/gunky trails made the trip back up even harder - but she hung in there and made it.  I took off to hike to Sunrise Point while Jenn took a few more pictures and then drove over to get me.

Easy MilesMarathon Pace MilesThreshold MilesVO2 Max MilesTotal Distance
14.100.000.000.0014.10

One mile earlier with the dog. Then an afternoon at Boondocks with the company.

Ran the Moonlight Half Marathon in Mapleton last night.  I started at 8:30 and finished at 11:20 - so 2 hours 50 minutes.

Lot more uphill than I expected the first few miles, so alternated walking and running. You are supposed to do this race without a watch and I kind of missed my Garmin, but it was nice not focusing on time and distance as much as I tend to do. They did a good job having people out at turns and lots of flashing and strobing lights (too much sometimes).

All participants needed to wear reflective gear.  I had on a reflective hat and reflective belt. They also recommended a headlamp and I brought a small one. I was very glad for that because it was awfully dark up in the canyon and even on the streets later and it would have slowed me down even more trying to stay on the paved trail and avoid a faceplant.  Very different not being able to see what is coming up and having to gauge whether you are going uphill or down.

Ran without music until mile 9.  I was totally enjoying the sounds of the woods and river and the frogs and crickets.  In the early out and back section did a lot of high fives encouraging people on.

It was a well run race.  I might try the Legacy Moonlight Run next year since it is closer.

Such Fun!

Went to a new doctor in the afternoon who changed the diagnosis from a pinched nerve to a sprained ligament.  Everything the first doctor told me to do was crippling me.  This doctor wanted me to walk as much as possible, so pushed my niece in a stroller for an hour and then walked another 30 or so minutes later.

St. George number 6 and marathon number 20 under the belt.  Hung with Leslie Peterson the entire race.  I was supposed to be motivating her, but my body fell apart in the second half and she kept me from DNF'ing.

Plantar Fasciitis kicked in bad in the left food early on in the race and made it painful.  Left IT Band flared up around 14 and I would feel some twinges like me knee wanted to give out every once in a while.  Got some Coban tape at an aid station that helped keep it liveable.

I can tell I altered my stride enough that my groin has some muscle damage.  Made it through - it wasn't pretty - but I finished.

Race: Fort Bliss Marathon (19.5 Miles) 04:26:25
Easy MilesMarathon Pace MilesThreshold MilesVO2 Max MilesTotal Distance
19.500.000.000.0019.50

Was down in El Paso, Texas visiting my daughter and son-in-law.  Since the first ever Ft. Bliss Marathon was occurring while I was in town, I decided to enter it.  Won't be often that I can get a race entry for only $45.

My son-in-law dropped me off the morning of the race.  There was a marathon, half marathon and 5 K all going on and not a ton of people there.  I figured it would be my one chance to place in my age group.  Less than 60 registered marathon runners and I only saw one other woman.  She was running the same pace as me for 6 or so miles.  Turns out there were four of us and I actually could have taken third place.

The race covered a lot of the main base of Fort Bliss.  I saw it intimately.  The roads were not closed and even with the marathon and half running the same course for the first 12 miles, I was pretty well alone the entire race.  No crowds, no cheering, but good support at aid station by the soldiers.

I took off my long sleeved shirt and gloves at mile 1.  Good indicator it was going to be a hot day.  Almost the entire race was run on concrete.  That took a toll on my legs.  I could feel the pounding and tried to find any opportunities I could to run on gravel - but those were few and far between.

I kept up a steady pace, but the day was pretty warm (low to mid 70's and heat reflecting off concrete) and it got to the point that I was not having any fun, my legs were hammered and there wasn't any real reason to finish.  I kept myself going for about 5 miles thinking how fun it would be to take third place - but when it got to the point that I didn't even care about that, I knew it was time to drop.  Jenn and Jeremy were waiting at the next aid station, so came back and picked me up.

We went back to the Fitness Center to get a massage.  I could see how few runners there were left on the course.  The other woman I had talked to earlier dropped at about mile 16 and her husband was picking up speed.  A few more minutes and I would have been in last place which would have been even more demotivating.

Driving to the finish, my legs were throbbing.  They actually felt more trashed then after a 50K race.  No pain - but they ached and throbbed.

On the bright side - taping my foot and wearing my orthotics seemed to keep the Plantar Fasciosis at bay.

First DNF in a marathon.  But I am fine with it.  I am actually glad I didn't keep pushing because it was going to be a miserable 90+ minutes and I don't enjoy that kind of misery.
